4. A multi disk clutch consists of five steel plates and four bronze plates.

The inner and

outer diameters of the disks are 75mm and 150mm respectively. Take µ = 0.1 and intensity
of pressure is limited to 0.3N/mm2. Assuming uniform wear, calculate: (i) Required force
to engage the clutch (ii) Power transmission capacity at 750 rpm.
5. A multiplate clutch has three pairs of contact surfaces. The outer and inner radii at the
contact surfaces are 120mm and 60mm respectively. The axial spring force is 1 kN.
Assuming uniform wear. Calculate the power transmitted at 1500 rpm. Take coefficient of
friction as 0.35.
6. A multiplate clutch has three pairs of contact surfaces. The outer and inner radii at the
contact surfaces are 100 mm and 50 mm respectively. The axial spring force is 1 kN.
Assuming uniform wear, calculate the power transmitted at 1500 rpm. Take µ =0.35.
PROBLEMS FOR PRACTICE

7. Determine the maximum, minimum and average pressure in plate clutch when the
axial force is 4 kN. The inside radius of the contact surface is 50 mm and the outside
radius is 100 mm. Assume uniform wear.

8. A single plate clutch transmits 8 kW at 1000 rpm. The axial pressure is limited to
70 kN/m2. The mean radius of the plate is 4.5 times the radial width of the friction
surface. If both the sides of the plate are effective and the coefficient of friction is 0.3.
Determine: (i) Inner and outer radii of the plate and the mean radius. (ii) Width of
the friction lining

9. A single plate clutch transmits 25kW 900rpm. The maximum pressure intensity
between the plates is 85kN/m2. The outer diameter of the plate is 360mm.Both the
sides of the plates are effective and coefficient of friction is 0.25.Determine: (i) The
inner diameter of the plate. (ii) The axial force to engage the clutch

10. A single plate clutch, with both sides effective, has outer and inner diameters 300
mm and 200 mm respectively. The maximum intensity of pressure at any point in the
contact surface is not to exceed 0.1 N/mm2. If the coefficient of friction is 0.3,
determine the power transmitted by a clutch at a speed 2500 r.p.m.
11. A single plate clutch, effective on both sides, is required to transmit 25 kW at 3000
r.p.m. Determine the outer and inner radii of frictional surface if the coefficient of friction
is 0.255, the ratio of radii is 1.25 and the maximum pressure is not to exceed 0.1 N/mm2.
Also determine the axial thrust to be provided by springs. Assume the theory of uniform
wear.

𝑅2
12. Determine the minimum value for the radius ratio ( 𝑅1 ) of a single plate clutch at
which the capacity of clutch will decreased by not more than 10% during the initial wear
period.

13. If the capacity of a single plate clutch decreases by 13% during the initial wear
period, determine the minimum value of the ratio of internal radius to external radius
for the same load. Consider both sides of the clutch plate to be effective.

14. A multi-disc clutch has three discs on the driving shaft and two on the driven shaft. The
outside diameter of the contact surfaces is 240 mm and inside diameter 120 mm. Assuming
uniform wear and coefficient of friction as 0.3, calculate the maximum axial intensity of
pressure between the discs for transmitting 25 kW at 575 r.p.m.

15. A multiple disc clutch has five plates having four pairs of active friction surfaces. If the
intensity of pressure is not to exceed 0.127 N/mm2, calculate the power transmitted at 500
r.p.m. The outer and inner radii of friction surfaces are 125 mm and 75 mm respectively.
Assume uniform wear and take coefficient of friction = 0.3.
