PE Rectifier 5

For a firing angle of 15 degrees: 1) The average output voltage is 260V and the conduction period of the thyristors is 120 degrees. 2) The thyristors conduct continuously for this firing angle between 0-30 degrees. For a firing angle of 60 degrees: 3) The average output voltage is 155V and the thyristors conduct discontinuously for 90 degrees.

Three-Phase Half-Wave Controlled Rectifier - 1 (PE rectifier 5.

sqproj)

Question: For the three-phase half-wave controlled rectifier circuit shown in Fig. 1, the input
supply is balanced three-phase with line-to-line voltage rating of 400 V, 50 Hz.

(a) Find the average output voltage (Vout ) and conduction period of thyristors (Ton ) in
degrees for a firing angle α = 15◦ .

(b) Find the average output voltage (Vout ) and conduction period of thyristors (Ton ) in
degrees for a firing angle α = 60◦ .

Figure 1: Three phase half-wave controlled rectifier with R load.

Solution:

(a) For a 3 - phase half-wave controlled rectifier shown in Fig. 1, the input phase voltages
Va , Vb , Vc have same amplitude and frequency with 120◦ phase shift as shown in Fig.2.

1
Thyristor T1 is forward biased when phase voltage Va is greater than the other phase
voltages. Thyristor T1 should be fired in this period to conduct. Similarly for thyristors
T2 and T3 , phase volatges Vb and Vc respectively should be greater than other two phase
voltages. Output voltage waveform is identical to the input phase voltage corresponding
to the thyristor conducting at the time. The output voltage waveforms are as shown in
Fig. 2. From Fig. 2, we can infer that for α up to 30◦ , Vout is continuous. Thus for
0◦ < α < 30◦ , the average value of output voltage,

3 Z 6 +α 3 3
Vout = Vmp sin(ωt) d(ωt) = Vmp cos α (1)
2π π6 +α 2π

For α = 15◦ , √
3 3 √
Vout = 230 2 cos 15◦ = 260 V (2)

The three thyristors conduct for same time period in a complete cycle and as the
conduction is continuous in the load, the conduction period,

360
Ton = = 120◦ (3)

(b) For α > 30◦ , Vout is discontionuous for a resistive load as shown in Fig. 2. The average
value of output voltage,

3 Zπ 3 π

Vout = Vmp sin(ωt) d(ωt) = Vmp 1 + cos α + (4)
2π π6 +α 2π 6

For α = 60◦ , average output voltage,

√
3 × 230 2 π π

Vout = 1 + cos + = 155 V (5)
2π 3 6

In this case, the three thyristors conduct for the same time duration, but the conduction
is discontinuous in the load. Thyristor T1 conducts from 90◦ to 180◦ .

Ton = 90◦ (6)

SequelApp Exercises:

For the circuit shown in Fig. 1, find the following.

(a) The firing angle (α) and the conduction time (Ton ) of the thyristor to get an average
output voltage, Vout = 240 V.

3
(b) The firing angle (α) and the conduction time (Ton ) of the thyristor to get an average
output voltage, Vout = 120 V.
