Satyameva Jayate Review

1. Alcohol abuse – “Think before you drink”

We all know that nothing is precious than life. Still many of us casually consume alcohol and drive
which is irresponsible and dangerous. Therefore the 9th episode of season 1 of Satyameva Jayate –
“Alcohol abuse- Think before you drink” was needed. Consuming alcohol irrationally not only affects
to those who consume but also the innocent ones who become a victim of it.

Vijay Simha who is severely addicted to alcohol leads his life into despair and madness as he loses his
job and gets cut off from the rest of the world. Similar story was of Laxman who was also a victim of
alcohol addiction where he spent a staggering Rs. 40 lakhs for his medical treatment and alcohol
consumption. Alcoholics Anonymous came as a saviour for both Vijay and Laxman by helping them
to ride off their addiction through classes and therapy. They have been free of alcohol for more than
10 years now.

Then on the show was Dr. Ashish Deshpande who says that alcoholism is just not an addiction but a
disease which should be treated as soon as possible. Famous Lyricist Javed Akhtar also made an
appearance and elucidated how he himself had been a victim to alcohol for 27 years and confessed
all his mistakes under the influence of alcohol in a tone of despair and repentance. He discouraged
young generation from drinking alcohol as its just glamorous and attractive from outside but
destroys the life when consumed.

Sumir Anand from Delhi narrated the sad story of his son Curran Anand who lost his life due to the
uncontrolled driving of a car by the driver who was under heavy influence of alcohol. And to his
surprise, the driver was out on bail the very next day. He raised a question on the drinking laws of
the country. The laws are not properly enforced by the government which is evident from the fact
that 98% of the accused are set free and don’t go to jail.

Dr Benegal shared the appropriate amounts in which alcohol consumption is safe but Indians
consume way more than the recommended amount. Then Amir’s team also interviewed doctors all
over the country who revealed that cases of road accidents due to overconsumption of alcohol are
very high.

The situation in our country is very serious and every year thousands of people die in road accidents
due to alcohol overconsumption. Alcohol not only completely destroys the life of the consumer but
also his family members who are dependent on him. Strict laws against alcohol overconsumption
should be enforced and appropriate justice should be done to such people. People should be made
aware that alcohol does no good to their lives and they may end up losing their loved ones by
consuming it.

2. Casteism and Untouchability – “Dignity for all”

The casteism problem is a reality in the Indian society. The educated and modern section of the
Indian society thinks it is non-existent but it is far from the truth. Therefore, the 10th episode of
season 1 of Satyameva Jayate throws light on this issue and reveals the brutal reality of
Untouchability. Many stories are examined in the episode which further quantify the above
statement.

Dr Kaushal Pawar faced severe humiliations as a child just because he was dalit. She was constantly
reminded this fact and treated differently at school by making them wear blue clothes as a mark of
distinction. But she fought against this injustice and with the constant support of her father, She is
now a lecturer at DU teaching Sanskrit. Balwant Singh, an IAS officer was maltreated just because he
was a Chamar. He resigned from his services because the ill-treatment was not bearable by him.

Stalin’s film ‘Untouched’ is an eye opener for the whole society where one can see all the shameful
things Dalits are forced to do like removing slippers when crossing an area of high caste members
etc. The documentary highlighted the irony that even though Dalits are the one who build and clean
our houses, yet they are denied entry to it.

In a shocking and horrible incident in Orissa, 3 dalit girls were punished for visiting Kali temple.
Bezwada Wilson from New Delhi was forcefully handed over the job of a manual scavenger just
because his father belonged to the same profession.

These instances show that India is far from being free of Casteism. We need to reflect upon our
thinking and work towards eradicating casteism in India. We should ask ourselves questions like is
their blood different from ours? Are they not citizens of India? A person should not be labelled by his
community or caste. Every person has an equal right over the country’s resources and should not be
denied opportunity on the basis of caste.

3. Solid Waste Management – “Don’t waste your garbage”

India generates a staggering 16 crore Kgs everyday. Management and proper disposal of this
waste is very important considering the various hazards people will face if not done so.
Therefore, the third episode of 2nd season of Satyameva Jayate highlights the above issue
and unravels massive loopholes in the Indian waste management system.

Various skin disease and hazards can be caused if wastes are burnt. Toxic chemicals are
released from waste burning plants which has a devastating impact on the overall ecosystem
and pollutes soil and water alike. A huge budget is allocated for cleanliness in the country
but is not used justifiably. Huge corporates and mafia have got into the business of solid
waste management and are doing massive scams and using taxpayers’ money for their own
profit. The municipalities have taken no step to make people aware of such issues and are
sometimes involved themselves.

We have always learnt about 3Rs in books – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle but only a small fraction
of us practice it. This episode also made many people aware of the fact that plastic wate and
biodegradable waste should be segregated before dumping. The episode applauded the
work done by Swach group in pune which has been helping many cleanliness workers to
become more empowered and independent. He also explained that how useful Biogas can
be created from garbage.

The success of Warangal city in state of Telengana is another great example of proper waste
management. The problem of waste management can be successfully mitigated by the joint
efforts of people and administration. People should strive to keep their city clean and
cooperate with the administration in achieving the dream of Swachh Bharat. People should
be made aware of the different hazards posed by dumping of wastes. Waste Management
Units should be installed at required places for handling of wastes.
