Multimedia combines multiple forms of media like text, audio, images, video and animation. A multimedia system allows users to store, compress, retrieve and display these different types of data. It is composed of components like a computer, monitor, speakers, graphics and sound cards, cameras, printers and scanners. Multimedia has advantages like being highly effective for education through visual and audio elements, and allowing impossible scenes to be possible through animation. However, it also has disadvantages such as being costly to develop and requiring trained professionals. The core components of multimedia are text, graphics, audio, video and animation.

Multimedia
 Multimedia
The word multimedia is derived from two words multi and media. The word multi means many
or multiple and the media means many or multiple and the media means information contains
such as text, audio, graphic, animation, video etc. multimedia is the combination of text, audio,
video, animation, image etc. to entertain the users.

 Multimedia system
Multimedia has capability to store, digitize compress, decompress, retrieve and display data on
the screen called multimedia system. The aim of multimedia system is to provide a creative and
effective way of producing strong and communicating information.
The multimedia system is composed of several items. They are:
i. A small computer with multi Colored monitor.
ii. Speaker
iii. Sound card
iv. Graphics card
v. Digital camera
vi. Color graphic printer
vii. Scanner
viii. CD-ROM / DVD-ROM

 Advantages of multimedia
i. Multimedia based education is highly effective because of sound and visual.
ii. Due to small shape and size easily imported/exported.
iii. Multimedia can be used in film industry for making impossible scene to possible.
iv. It can be used as a trainer for providing training of any subject.
v. It can be used for making webpages more attractive.
vi. It helps to make advertisement more attractive and effective.

 Disadvantages of multimedia
i. It is costly to develop multimedia product.
ii. Trained manpower is required to create and use it.
iii. It is not possible to distribute and use in remote area where poor people stay.
iv. It takes more time to create.

 Components of multimedia
The components of multimedia are as follows: -
i. Text
ii. Graphics
iii. Audio

v. Animation

i. Text: -
Text is the most widely used and flexible means of presenting on paper or display unit. The
text may include alphabet, number and other special symbols. In multimedia text is broadly
used for expressing different types of information for example, castes on movies, contents
of presentation, webpages etc.

ii. Graphics: -
A picture is worth of thousands of words. An image, picture or drawing can be considered as
graphics. The graphics can express many things in shorter time frame. Graphics represents
still images and define as static representation. It gives better and clear idea on the
particular topic. For example, charts, picture in presentation, bit map image.

iii. Audio: -
Audio is the one of the most important components in multimedia presentation. Audio
represents the audable sound via speaker. It is most important in some multimedia
presentation. Most of the games, movies, adverting etc. are the most effective tools for
convey the information. For example, Audio on movies.

iv. Video: -
The main component of presentation is video. It is representation of figures in systematic
order. Video contains images, figures, graphs, animation and other components to
represent on particular topics. Video is used to generate visual environment during
representation. For example, movies, video games.

v. Animation: -
Animation means movement of text or picture to one place to another. It is very important
in film industry because it makes impossible scene to possible. Cartoons can be made from
animation with funny faces like making noses bigger with big head and thin leg.

 Application of multimedia
There are various applications of multimedia. Some of them are discussed below: -
i. Education: -
Multimedia is used to produce computer-based training coursed popularly called CBTs and
reference book like encyclopedia. A CBT lets the user to go through a series of presentation,
text about a particular topic and associated illustration in various information formats.
Edutainment is an informal term used to describe combining education with entertains
especially multimedia entertainment.

ii. Industry: -

In industrial sector, multimedia is used a way to help present information to shareholders,


superior and co-worker. Multimedia is also helpful for providing employ training, advertising
and selling products all over the world via virtually unlimited web-based technology.
iii. Medicine: -
In medicine, doctors can get trained by looking at a visual surgery or they can simulate how
the human body is affected by diseases spread by viruses and bacteria and then developed
technique to prevent it.

iv. Web page: -


In early days only text was implemented in the webpage which was static in nature. After
the advancement of multimedia technologies, nowadays webpage includes graphics and
animation makes dynamic the website eye catching fascinating.

v. Communication: -
Today is the communication era. Communication plays the vital role in our life for
transferring information. For example, chatting in previous days was just simple the text,
now chatting can be done with full use of multimedia like video chatting and audio chatting.
This is the boon of the multimedia features.

 Characteristics of multimedia system: -


A multimedia system has four basic characteristics:
i. Multimedia systems must be computer controls.
ii. Multimedia systems are integrated.
iii. The information they handle must be represented digitally.
iv. The interface to the final representation of media is usually interactive.
