3
Were you able to complete the task? If yes, you may proceed to the next page. If no, take time to finish
for you to better understand the next discussions.

In our study of previous mathematics, you have learned the operational properties of equality and their
applications to the number system. We shall now study the applications of these properties to the
measures of segments and angles.
Properties of Equality
Let a, b, and c be real numbers.

1. Reflexive Property of Equality

For any a, a=a.
Examples:
a. m∠𝐴= m∠𝐴
b. AB=AB
2. Symmetric Property
If a=b, then b=a.
Examples:
a. If m∠𝐴 = 90, then 90 = m∠𝐴
b. If AB + CD= 45, then 45 = AB + CD
3. Transitive Property
If a=b and b=c, then a =c.
Examples:
a. m∠𝐴 = m∠B and m∠B = m∠C, then m∠A = m∠C
b. m∠A + m∠B = 180 and m∠C + m∠D = 180, then m∠A + m∠B = m∠C + m∠D = 180.
4. Addition Property of Equality ( APE )
If a=b and c= d, then a+c = b+d
Examples:
a. If m∠ S + m ∠ T = 80, then m ∠ T = 80 - m ∠ S.
b. If AB + XY = 55, then XY = 55 – AB.

4
5. Multiplication Property of Equality ( MPE )
If a=b and c =d, then ac=bd
Examples:
a. If ½ m ∠ N = 100, then m ∠ N = 50.
b. If 15 QR=25, then QR = 25 (5) = 125
6. Substitution Property of Equality ( SPE )
If a = b, then a can be substituted for b in any equation or expression
Examples:
a. If AB = TU = 150, and AB = DE, then DE = TU = 150.
b. If m∠ A = m∠ B = 180, and m∠ A = m∠ C, then m∠ C = m∠ B = 180.
7. Distributive Property
a ( b+c) = ab + ac, where a, b, and c are real numbers.
Examples:
c. 4 ( y +5) = 4y + 20
d. 8 (x – 2) = 8x -16

Now, it’s your turn to apply the concepts on illustrating the need for axiomatic structure of a
mathematical system and geometry.

5

6.) Multiplication Property of Equality:
If 𝑚∠ x =𝑚∠ y, then 2𝑚∠ x = _________________.
