Bicom allows remote access to S12 via either a modem dialup connection or a TCP/IP
connection.
It has the following features:

1) It acts as a firewall by allowing access only after entering a password. When the user
connects, he is presented with a simple prompt “>” and he must give the correct password.
This password system can be used in two ways
 a single password which is defined in the Bicom.ini file under parameter
RemotePassword=???? where default you have the string “system12”. To change this,
you should close Bicom, change the parameter with an editor, and restart Bicom.
 A second password system allows multiple passwords. These passwords are stored in
the file Bicoms.txt. This file has to be created with the separate program
Bicompas.exe, and the resulting file must simply be copied into the Bicom main
directory. No restart of Bicom is required. This file can also be uploaded from
remote. As soon as Bicom finds the Bicoms.txt file it will use the passwords and will
no longer use the password stored in the INI file.
2) Bicom allows the S12 staff to monitor the activities on the remote connection. They can
control and assist the remote connected expert (providing information, making test calls,
etc..). All commands given on Bicom either from remote or locally are stored in logfiles.
These logfiles are stored in the subdirectory “logfiles” with as name the date plus suffix .log.
It is not possible to switch off this logging. Each day after midnight Bicom closes the logfile
and creates a new one with the new date. If the previous day logfile is smaller than 80
characters the file is deleted.
3) It is possible to connect to in two ways:
 Via dialup modem. I recommend that for this purpose modern internal modems are
used. An external modem can too easily be interfered with and you need to have a
serial port free for this whereas with the internal modem it does not need an external
comport. The Comports will be needed to connect to S12 Mptmon, and maybe also to
connect to the Printer channel and run Repview to collect the S12 reports. The
modem init strings should be:
i. AT&FE0S0=5&W0 for most modern modems
ii. For the Alcatel external modem :
AT&F&C3&K1X3&U2S52=200S30=134^M|
AT*F1&E1*E1L1S0=1&W0^M
The baud rate to the modem should be 19200 or higher. To S122 it should be
9600 Bd 8 bit no parity.
 Via TCP/IP : For this you have to select Preferences.Parameters Lan Info : server and
give a port number. Usually this can be 23 (telnet) but any other port number can be
used. Verify that you have access through the firewalls. You have two possibilities
for the TCP\IP access. If you use the simple 32 bit Bicom (from file Bicomw32.zip),
you can only have one connection at a time. If you use the Bicom from file
Bicomw32muli_user_server.zip several connections can be setup at one time. This
allows that several people use the same connection and work maybe on the same
problem from different locations. The Ip connection can be made at the same time as
the modem connection.
4) Bicom is NOT intended as terminal emulator for the remote side. Please use S12com.exe
instead.
5) BiCom has a build-in file transfer protocol. If your terminal emulator has this also then you
can send file from and to the BiCom Pc. The preferred and tested protocol is Zmodem, which
is very easy to use and needs no assistance from the receiving side. The files received by
BiCom are stored in the directory set-up in the option directories which can also be changed
in the bicom.ini file. The exchange staff can also from their side send files to the remote side.
The immediate benefit of this file transfer facility is that it allows upgrading of BiCom via
modem. Just send first a small unzip batch file and then BiCOM1.ZIP containing the new
version. Ask the local staff to close Bicom, start your unzip batch file and restart Bicom and
all is done.
6) Bicom provides a set of remote commands. A help for these commands can be displayed
while being connected by typing $H.
7) BiCom has a small time scheduler build in which allows you to give MPTMON command at
up to four different times of the day. Usually this would be done by making a macro which is
executed by BiCom. To program the scheduler, select Preferences.Scheduler.Macro and fill
out the needed fields.
8) If you use on the remote side the S12com.exe program, you can chat with the Bicom local
staff, by selecting Modem.Chat or Press Alt-C. This will allow you to chat without
interrupting any other text, which comes from Mptmon.
9) When installing Bicom in an exchange, do insist on having a dedicated telephone line so that
in case of emergencies this remote connection is immediately available.
10) If you have questions or suggestions for improvement please send an email to
[email protected] or call +79037430129.
