LESSON 1.1

Share your Ideas

1.) The video help me a lot to understand clearer and in an easier way what the topic is all
about and in the mathematics in the modern world as a whole. I helps us a lot especially since
we don’t have face to face classes and just like me, it is hard for me to catch up things and
lessons, thanks for this video and we learned like we’re having a great class in actual. I have
learned in this video that pattern is defined as regular, repeated and recurring forms or designs.
We can see patterns everywhere we go just like the trees in the streets, the lay out of floor
type, the design of skyscraper and everything around us has patterns. Patterns includes
symmetries, spiral, stripe, cracks, forms etc. Studying patterns helps identify relationships and
find logical connections.

The shapes and patterns of plants and animals provide a rich source for the mathematically
minded who may look for answers to the following question:

(a).Basically because the mollusk does not enlarge its shell in a uniform manner. It secret is
shell materials faster on one side than the other of the open edge of the shell. A two
dimensional version of this phenomenon may be observed in the growth of animal horns.

(b).A typical starfish has five-sided symmetry with no clear heads; the starfish can move in any
direction, led by any one of its five arms.

©.A helixes mathematically defined by amplitude and pitch. An icosahedron is a geometric

shape with 20 sides, each composed of an equilateral triangle. The sides are composed of viral
protein sub units that create a structural unit, which is repeated to form a larger side and the
other sides of the icosahedron.

(d).Coronavirus, any virus belonging to the family Coronaviridae. Coronavirus have enveloped
virions (virus particles) that measure approximately 120nm (1 nm = 10 metre) in diameter club-
shaped.

(e.) Having bilaterally symmetrical bodies (the same on both sides along an axis) permits them
to propel forward in a straight line. In evolutionary history, animals that moved quickly and
efficiently from point A to point B would have been more successful and selected for than those
who were in effective at locomotion.

(f).The surface of the brain, known as the cerebral cortex, is very uneven, characterized by a
distinctive pattern off olds or bumps, known as gyri (singular: sulcus);these gyri and sulci form
important landmarks that allow us to separate the brain into functional centers. The most
prominent sulcus, known as the longitudinal fissure, is the deep groove that separates the brain
into two halves or hemispheres: the left hemisphere and the right hemispheres.

(g).Just as most people are right-handed-atrait, remember controlled by the left side of the
brains to do most people do the bulk of their linguistic processing in their brain’s left
hemisphere. Right-handedness then may simply be an accidental by-product of the way most of
our brains are wired up.

Activity 1.

Coconut tree has 13 to 20 inches long pinnate leaves. Leaflets have lanceolate shape. They can
reach 24 to 35 inches in length. Coconut tree is attached to the ground via a strong fibrous root
system. The stem is smooth, light gray in color and has prominent leaf scars. The stem is
topped with a crown of 60-70 spirally arranged leaves. The leaves are long(upto7m/23 ft),
pinnately divided and composed of 200-250 tapering leaflets.

Activity 2.

We observed that many of the natural things follow the Fibonacci sequence. It appears in
biological settings such as branch in gin trees, phyllot axis (the arrangement of leaves on a
stem), the fruit sprouts of a pineapple, the flowering of an artichoke, an uncurling fern and the
arrangement of a pine cone’s bracts ect.

Activity 3.

1. A mathematical concept is knowledge of the mathematical necessity of a particular.

Mathematical relationship (Simon2017).This means knowledge that is given what we have.
Learned previously, a particular relationship must exist.

2. Pythagoras studied odd and even numbers, triangular numbers, and perfect numbers.
Pythagoreans contributed to our understanding of angles, triangles, areas, proportion,
polygons, and polyhedral. Pythagoras also related music to mathematics.
Activity 4.

(a). Patterns in nature are visible regularities off or found in the natural world. These patterns
recur in different contexts and can sometimes be modelled mathematically. Natural patterns
include symmetries, trees, spirals, meanders, waves, foams, tessellations, cracks and stripes.

(b). Predicting the size, location, and timing of natural hazards is virtually impossible, but
because of the help of Mathematics we are able to forecast calamities such as hurricanes,
floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, wild fires, and landslides etc.

©. Mathematics is one of the most important aspects in our daily lives. It helps us tell time,
assists us in finances, engages us with better problem-solving skills and helps us to understand
the world better. Mathematics is spreading across the universe, you could see it almost
everywhere. Mathematics helps in controlling nature and occurrences because some of them
behave Mathematically

Self-Assessment Question 2.

1. Mathematicians world-wide are contributing to the understanding of the Covid-19 epidemic,

working with specialists such as micro biologists and virologists on mathematical models that
take into account the different situations indifferent countries. This collects these activities and
projects from all over the world to provide a global view of the contributions of mathematics to
help in the fight against COVID-19.

2.Numerous ideas and puzzles came to my mind. I’m so amazed that everything around us is
having its role in our realm. I learned and proved that all-around us has purpose and patterns
in our living. Everything around us has form with math numbers; even the simplest things have
numbers. Everything is connected, even as humans have their pattern in our bodies. I’m
thinking that the creature of this whole system that we’re living in made it to remind us that he
didn’t make this just because he only wants it. He made a plan; he organizes everything
according to its niche. He wants us to see that all of his creation isn’t just a flip. It’s more than
a masterpiece. He made this to show us that everything can relate to one’s other movement,
shape, and art. He made everything with one thing that can be called “pattern of nature.
“Besides, I noticed that everything is in mathematics. The golden ratio was mind-blowing.
Imagine, it’s everywhere. The flowers, shells, paintings, human bodies, and animals have
natural patterns and golden ratios.

Self-Assessment Question 3

1.The subject makes a man more methodical and systematic. Mathematics makes our life
orderly and prevents chaos. Certain qualities that you are nurtured while studying mathematics
like creativity, reasoning, abstractor spatial thinking, critical thinking, problem-solving, and even
effective communications skills.

2.One who has learned to think mathematically will be able to think through many other issues
in life, whether numbers are involved or not. Using discipline to form your opinions is much
better than using “feel good” emotions or laziness. Mathematics, at it score, is a way to
organize your thinking.
