ZaxConvert Quick Start Guide

================ INSTALLING THE ZAXCONVERT SOFTWARE ================
The new MP3 versions of ZaxConvert application require the LAME MP3 encoder to be installed on your computer.
These instructions provide details on installing the Zaxconvert software and installing the proper LAME MP3 encoder.
Installing the ZaxConvert Software

==================================
Windows XP
----------
1. Unzip the ZaxConvert archive, if required.
2. Rename the ZaxConvert application from the .ex~ to .exe extension.

When the file is placed in the zip file, .ex~ is used because many email
applications prevent .exe files from being received.
To rename a file, left-click the file and choose Rename from the pop-up menu.
3. Move the ZaxConvert application to the desired location on your computer.
Mac OS X
--------
1. Double-click the MacConvert .dmg file.

.dmg files are image files, when opened, they appear as separate drive devices
on your desktop.
2. Click OK on the license screen.

This mounts a volume titled ZaxConvert on your desktop.
3. Drag the ZaxConvert Software to the desired location on your computer.
4. Drag the ZaxConvert volume on your desktop to the trash to remove it from
your desktop.
You may also leave it on your desktop and when you shut down, it is automatically
removed for you.
About LAME
==========
LAME is an encoding routine used in creating and playing MP3 files. It is freely
available, however LAME is only supplied as source code from the programmers updating
the routine. This requires you to download the .dll or library file from another source
where it has already been compiled, since the license agreement prevents Zaxcom from
distributing the file.

Downloading the LAME Encoder
============================
The LAME encoder is available for many operating systems, so you must make sure
you download the proper version. Locations for downloading the Windows XP and
Mac OS X versions are provided in these instructions.
Windows XP
----------
1. Download the LAME .DLL file from the following website:

0.dll?rev=1.2&cvsroot=bf-blender
You might need to rename the file to libmp3lame.dll or libmp3lame-0.dll after downloading.
2. Rename lame.dll to libmp3lame.dll or libmp3lame-0.dll after downloading, if necessary.
3. Copy the libmp3lame.dll file into the same directory as the ZaxConvert Utility.
Mac OS X
--------
1. Download the LAME library from the following website:

2. Double-click the .dmg file mount the disk image.
3. Double-click the lame-3.xx.pkg icon.

This begins the installation process by placing libmp3lame.dylib in /usr/local/lib folder.
Using the ZaxConvert Application
================================
To convert a TRX900 or ZFR100 .zax file, do the following (this process is the same for Mac OS X
and Windows):
1. Open the ZaxConvert program.
2. Insert your MiniSD Card into your computer.
3. Choose the settings for the output file.

You need to choose the file output format (MP3, BWAV Poly, or BWAV Mono), Bit Depth (16- or 24-bit),
Number of channels (2, 4, 6, 8, or no limit of channels), and if you need to force 48K stamps
for the DV40.
4. Choose the import folder location.

This is usually on your MiniSD card and contains the ZDIR and ZAX0000 files.
A list of segements appears.
5. Choose the output folder location.

Ensure that you do not have MiniSD card choosen as the output folder location.
6. Click Translate Files.
Important Notes About the FIles on Your TRX900 and ZFR100 Device
----------------------------------------------------------------
* Use the Timecode start and end to translate a small portion of a segment.
* The ZaxConvert software must "recover" any files left in an open state when
the device was powered off. To avoid this recovery process, stop the recording session
prior to turning off the device.
