Volcanic ash from an eruption in Iceland was disrupting air travel in parts of Europe. Over 500 flights were cancelled in the UK, mainly affecting Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Derry airports. The latest forecast showed no ash over the UK after 1am on May 25th, suggesting improvements, but conditions remained changeable. Travel Advisory – UK
Time:     22:30 GMT

Date:    24 May 2011

Issue No:  3015

Reference:  Trango Travel Alert issued 23 May 2011

Ash Cloud Flight Delays

The monitoring of the spread and dispersion of the volcanic ash from Grímsvötn,
Iceland  continues.  The  uncertain  weather  and  changing  wind  patterns  continue  to  make
accurate predictions difficult but over 500 flights (of 29,000 scheduled across Europe) were
cancelled today; the majority affecting movement in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Derry airports.
The latest information from the Met Office shows that no volcanic ash is currently predicted
in airspace over the UK from 0100 UK time on Wednesday 25th May. This suggests that the
situation  should  therefore  continue  to  improve  however  it  still  needs  to  be  monitored
carefully especially in these changeable conditions.

Other areas. Tomorrow the ash cloud may impact parts of Denmark, southern Norway and
south‐west  Sweden.  High  concentrations  of  ash  are  also  forecast  to  spread  down  through
central  Russia  but  should  then  clear  over  the  following  24  hours.  There  may  be  some
interruptions or delays to flights through these areas.

Germany's Meteorological Service has confirmed that it will close its northern airspace on 25
May,  with  Bremen  Airport  closing  at  0300  GMT  and  Hamburg  Airport  at  0400GMT;  the
duration is still to be confirmed and the airspace over Hanover and Berlin is being assessed.

UK  Airports  and  airspace  remains  open  and  decisions  are  currently  being  made  airline  by
airline on whether to operate flights. When considering normal traffic volumes, the impact
on  flights  over  the  coming  days  continues  to  be  assessed  as  relatively  low  however,  it  is
recommended that travellers:

• Continue to monitor news reports and to check with airlines prior to departing for
the airport.
• If flights are delayed or cancelled, consider alternative means (train, car or ferry)
• If your are checked into a hotel room but do not yet have a means of travelling back
from  your  current  destination,  check  with  your  travel  agency  and  local  sources  to
understand the policy around honouring your arranged check‐out time. If possible it
is  recommended  that  you  extend  your  stay  until  you  have  a  confirmed  travel
itinerary.
• Trango Safe  Travel  System (TSTS) clients should contact Trango Operations  (T:  +44
1243 608550 (24 hrs)) to ensure your company, airline and travel agency know how
to reach you and where available ensure GPRS / GSM tracking is switched on.

Travel Managers should consider:

• Increasing credit card limits of travellers impacted by the ash cloud;
• Those  delayed  overseas  may  wish  to  advise  local  Embassies  of  their  location  and
where necessary to request assistance where VISA’s are expiring.

Further  information  will  be  provided  when  appropriate.  In  the  meantime,  please  forward
requests for further or more detailed advice to [email protected] or contact Trango
Operations (24 hours) on +44 1243 608550.
