Answer the FF questions and write it in the comment box.

1. Define investigator
 A person who gathers confidential information and conducts an investigation for an
individual or company; private detective
 someone whose job is to officially find out the facts about something, especially a crime
or an accident

2. Duties and responsibilities of an investigator

“A good investigator needs to be conscious of his or her own thinking, and that thinking needs
to be an intentional process.”

An investigator will usually perform the following duties:

 Collect, analyze and preserve evidence.

 Investigate complex criminal activities or local, federal or state law violations.
 Direct crime-scene investigators or other law enforcement personnel at crimes scenes.
 Expected to preserve the crime scene
 Devise an investigative plan that will lead to the forming of reasonable grounds to
identify and arrest the person or persons responsible for the crime.

3. Define crime scene

 A crime scene is any physical scene, anywhere that may provide potential evidence to
an investigator. It may include a person’s body, any type of building, vehicles, places in
the open air or objects found at those locations. “Crime scene examination” therefore
refers to an examination where forensic or scientific techniques are used to preserve
and gather physical evidence of a crime.

4. Discuss briefly the investigation proper in the crime scene.

 Establish the scene dimensions and identify potential safety and health hazards -
Investigators initially locate the “focal point” of the scene, the main area of disturbance.
 Establish security - According to Locard’s Exchange Principle, every person who enters
or exits the scene will add or subtract material from the crime scene, so it’s crucial to
quickly secure the area.
 Plan, communicate and coordinate - Before collecting evidence, investigators must first
develop a theory regarding the type of offense that occurred.
 Conduct a primary survey/walkthrough - An initial survey of the scene is then
conducted to prioritize evidence collection.
 Document and process the scene - With a plan in place, the crime scene team conducts
a thorough, coordinated investigation of the scene, collecting all probative evidence.
 Conduct a secondary survey/review - To ensure that the scene has been thoroughly
searched, a second survey of the area is conducted as a quality control step.
 Record and preserve evidence - To make certain that all evidence is accounted for, an
inventory log is created.
