Technology

• The word “ technology ” is the combination of the Greek words

“technicos” (technical, systematic and planned operation) and “logia”
(words, discourses, directives)
In terms of the meaning of the word, it means the way of doing
systematic and planned work.
Engineer
• The words “ engineer ” and “ ingenious ” both stem from the Latin
“ingenium ”, which means a talent, natural capacity, or clever invention.
Early applications of clever inventions often were military ones, and
ingeniarius became one of several words applied to builders of such
ingenious military machines.
• “ A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a
person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as
possible. There are no prima donnas in engineering. ” Freeman Dyson
Engineer

• In a modern sense, an engineer is a person who

converts theoretical knowledge produced by
scientists into practical knowledge that technicians
can apply.
Engineering

• Modern Definition of Engineering by ABET (Accrediting Board for

Engineering and Technology) : The profession in which a knowledge of
the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience,
and practice is applied with judgement to develop ways to utilize,
economically, the materials and forces of the nature for the benefit of
mankind.

What Engineers do?
What Engineers do?
• Engineers are the practitioners of the art of managing the application
of science and mathematics. Academic knowledge, practical training,
experience, and work-study are all avenues to becoming an engineer.
The key attribute for engineers is the direct application of that
knowledge and experience.
What Engineers do?

• Engineers design, evaluate, develop, test, revise, install, inspect and

maintain products and systems. In addition, they predict and
determine materials and work flow processes, and supervise the
production and construction stages.
Technology Management

• Technology Management is a management discipline that evaluates

the potentials of its technologies and seeks to use these potentials for
the benefit of the organization.
• Technology management is the combination of science, engineering
and management knowledge and practice, with technology as the
central means of wealth and value creation. (Khalil, 2000)
Economic Value
Economic Value

• Economic value is simply the difference between the unit cost value
of a product (or service) and the value that the customer is willing to
pay for the product.
Technology development
• The cost of technology development is high and time consuming.
Correctly guiding material resources, human resources and other
economic and social elements through decisions; however, it is necessary
to move at the right time and in the right direction.
• There are three basic strategic questions to be answered by the
companies:
• 1.Which technologies will enable which jobs today and in the future?
2.Which technologies do we have to develop and which ones can we get
from outside?
• 3. Which technologies will be kept, protected, and commercialized?
Technological developments we have
experienced in the last years??
• When we look at the technological developments we have
experienced in the last years, we can give the following examples.
• Artificial Intelligence
• Nanodevices
• Drone Technology
• Wearable Technology
• Augmented Reality
Artificial Intelligence
• "Can machines think?" The adventure of artificial intelligence
technology started with this question asked by computer scientist
Alan Turing's .
• In the simplest terms, artificial intelligence (AI) refers to systems or
machines that mimic human intelligence to perform tasks and can
iteratively heal themselves based on the information they gather.
Augmented reality
• Augmented reality overlays digital content and information onto the
physical World.

Nanodevices

• They are in the nanoscale and some of which include nano and
micro electromechanical systems (NEMS / MEMS).
• There are various sensors, carbon nano tubes, nano-structured solar
cells and nano particles targeting cancer treatment.
