Q. Make a list of five specific HR problems you think Carter Cleaning will have to
grapple with.
"Human Resources isn't a thing we do, it's the thing that runs our business."- Steve Wynne
Startups have become very common nowadays as entrepreneurs are looking to solve the real-
world problem through their intuitive mind. But to expand their business, they always require a
game-changer and multi-tasking workforce. Same is the case with Carter Cleaning company.
They were looking to expand their line of services and stores. They hired on-site managers and
employees to run business. But in between all this, they faced some problems related to HR.
Below are the five problems they have to grapple with:
1. Define the operational business goals and form a well-defined path to fulfil them. They
have to set rules and procedures for every organization that help them achieve their
targets. Organizations can't compromise on this front because it may lead to the lack of
clarity for employees which can hamper their performance.
2. To post the job description on the right platform so that it can reach to the right
audience and people with desired skills and competencies can apply for the job. Hiring
the appropriate candidate and effective recruitment drive is an essential step towards
achieving the goals.
4. Training and development workshops for upper management and lower management
help them upgrade their skills. Orientation program while onboarding the employee
makes them aware of the organization's work culture. These initiatives enhance the
skills and boost the morale of the employees.
5. Regular feedback to the employee from the higher management helps them be aware
of the quality of work they are producing for the project and the organization.
Implementing these performance metrics sets the performance standards, making the
employee achieve specific standards. Quality appraisal interviews, coaching them
regularly and taking feedback from employees about feeling valued positively affect
employee relations.
As per my opinion, the main problems that were faced by the Carter company is related to
business development and human resource.
As they were into the expansion phase and Jennifer joined the sixth store chain, she was
looking to bring modern management concepts and techniques for solving the business
problems and facilitating the Carter company's growth.
If I were Jennifer, I would monitor the employees' performance and interact with them to
know their problems and improvement area in the organization structure. I would then define
the store's performance indicators to ensure that employees are rated as per the industry
standards. I would also organize the training and development program for the newly hired
employees to bring all employees at the same level to have the common vision towards the
organization's success. Simultaneously, workshops for the current employee to upgrade their
skill-set and motivation level.
I would also have established the system to gather the customer feedback and convert those to
employee feedback to take necessary action. This approach will help the organization keep up
with the quality of work, ensuring no loopholes while fulfilling the customer's needs.
