Math 8-Lesson 1 (Q4)
Recall that when adding and subtracting similar fractions, simply add or subtract
the numerators, and then copy the same denominator. For instance:
2 4 7 13
+ + = .
3 3 3 3
When it comes to fractions with different denominators (dissimilar fractions), find
the least common denominator first (LCD) to express the fractions into similar
fractions before adding or subtracting them.
Rational expressions have similar properties with rational numbers. The process
of multiplying, dividing, adding, and subtracting rational numbers is also applied in
the operations of rational expressions.
Example 1. Add or subtract the following similar rational expressions.
a.) c.)
3 2 5 c c+2 c+ ( c+2 ) 2 c+ 2
b.) 2 + m+ 2 = m+2
m+ d.)

Example 2.−Find the= LCD of the following rational − = =
b+33 b+3 b+ 3 2 xy 2 xy 2 xy 2 xy
∧7
a.) 4 a2
8a
1. Factor the denominators: 4 a2=2 ∙ 2∙ a ∙ a
8 a=2 ∙2 ∙2 ∙ a
2. The greatest number of times that 2 appears in either of the factors
is 3, so 23.The greatest number of times that a appears in either of
the factors is 2, so a 2.
3
∧7
Therefore, the LCD of 4 a2 is (2¿¿ 3) ( a2 )=8 a2 ¿ .

b.) 9 x

3x +x
1. Factor the denominators: 9 x 2=3 ∙3 ∙ x ∙ x
2
3 x + x =x ∙(3 x+ 1)
2. The greatest number of times that 3 appears in either of the factors
is 2, so 32 . The greatest number of times that x appears is 2, so x 2
and lastly, the greatest number of times that (3 x+ 1) appears is 1,
so (3 x+ 1)1 .

Therefore, the LCD of 9 x is 32 a2 (3 x +1) or 27 x 3+ 9 x2 .

c.) 3 x
2y
1. Factor the denominators: 3 x=3 ∙ x
2 y=2 ∙ y
2. All prime factors appear once, therefore the LCD is
3 ∙ x ∙2 ∙ y=6 xy .
