CONTENT BEYOND SYLLABUS

VOD Technology:
VOD stands for video on demand, a technology that allows people to watch films
instantly. With video on demand, viewers get to choose exactly what they want to
watch, and when and where they wish to watch it. As the technology improves, video on
demand has become a popular choice for those wanting to watch movies instantly;
however, VOD continues to develop as technology evolves.
 VOD Defined

Video on demand is an interactive system that allows viewers to select a movie from a
database and watch it instantly on their television or personal computer. With video on
demand, viewers have the ability to fast forward, rewind or pause. Video on demand is
offered through a cable, broadband or telephone provider, generally for a monthly
subscription fee, although some companies charge per use.
 How VOD Works

Before it is delivered instantly to your home, the show or movie is first put into digital
format, and stored on a video server. When a video on demand request is made, the
movie is compressed and transmitted through the cable or broadband connection. Once
it reaches the receiver, the movie is decoded and decompressed through a set-top unit,
then stored on a video server in the viewer's television or computer. The viewer then
has the ability to watch the movie instantly, and can control the movie (stop, pause)
through a remote control unit.
 Competition

While video on demand is a popular form of interactive entertainment, it still has

competition from other entertainment technologies. Near Video on Demand (NVOD)
offers a less expensive form of direct viewing and is often standard in areas where video
on demand is not yet available. With NVOD, movies and shows are broadcast at different
time intervals. The drawback is that customers then have to wait for their movie to start
and have no control over playback. Push VOD is another demand service and requires
the use of a DVR that records the content from a broadcast for playback at a later date.
However, its use is dependent on the viewer recording the content, so choices are
limited.
 Limitations of VOD
While video on demand is becoming widespread as streaming movies increase in
popularity, there are still limitations to its use. Many movies are unavailable for
streaming, as VOD providers must get rights from the distributors before offering them
on demand. Also, as video on demand is an emerging technology, the fees associated
with VOD are still high and may not be available for those with slower connections.
However, as the on demand process is streamlined, video on demand will become more
and more accessible to the general public.
