Lesson 3: Anthropology

ACTIVITY 3

When have you experienced cultural differences? How did cultural differences
and differing ways of doing things according to culture become visible? List some of
these.

As a campus journalist during my high school years, I have experienced going to

places to complete. Given such background, I experienced cultural differences. It was
during the 2018 National Schools Press Conference held at Dumaguete, all campus
journalism representatives all over the nation participated the big event. I have
witnessed differing backgrounds and culture, specifically religion difference, ethnicity,
and language. Participants from the part of Mindanao, where Muslim people are
abundant, were wearing their traditional clothing during the opening program and their
prayer was held differently and separated from Christians. Another is when the few
people from Dumaguete showcased their festival in a form of intermission number
where they wore their traditional costumes and jive with their traditional dances. The hall
was filled as well with different dialects from different regions, I remember I heard
Tagalog, Bisaya, Ilocano, Pangasinense, and a lot more dialects the reason why the
event use an English medium so that everyone can understand and follow the program.

I have learned a lot and make friends with other regions giving me the chance to
know about their cultures more. Indeed, cultural difference is real; it might sometimes be
a cause of miscommunication, barriers, and such but when understand clearly it is an
interesting thing. Understanding cultural differences require deliberate effort to be able
to navigate these differences in order to come up with optimal outcomes.
ASSESMENT 3

Why is generalization dangerous and how do you avoid it?

"Everyone is unique", a colloquial saying that I guaranteed everyone knows. But

even knowing that one is different from other, human mind is indeed an intriguing thing.
This can help us to grasp and comprehend things, but it can also distort reality — which
is a product of overgeneralization. Generalization, typically, is a very useful thought
process for it enables person to expand its knowledge beyond experience through
senses like being able to infer characteristics of an entire category even without
scrutinizing every element in that category. However, despite generalization being a
helpful thing, it is prone to be done in a wrong way. When we overdo generalization, it
will result into overgeneralization, thus resulting into broad and inaccurate conclusions.
It makes a serious problem when we over-generalize, which will result into generating
faulty ideas that constitute to bad decision-making, it limits beliefs which stop people to
do what they really can do, it creates non-existent artificial barrier thus giving us the
feeling of insecurity, fears, lack of initiative, missed opportunities, and more.

However, we could still see the reality and avoid overdoing generalization.
Everyone should start to focus on their own thoughts and ideas and utilize their minds to
start embracing the awareness for exaggerated generalization. After having the
awareness, everyone should persist questioning assumptions they have come up and
shift conception if necessary upon comprehension. By doing so, negative and distorted
thoughts generated in generalization can be diverted into a positive thought process.
