NISSAN Note (E11) 1.4 16V CR14DE: Timing Chain: Removal/installation

Disconnect the battery before removing the engine to replace the timing chain on a Nissan Note 1.4L engine. Remove numerous components including the cylinder head, camshafts, crankshaft pulley, oil pan and timing chain components. Install the new timing chain by aligning marks and refitting removed components in reverse order. Check camshaft timing before finalizing reassembly.

Timing chain: removal/installation


General
Before disconnecting the battery cable, check the audio system security code

Removal
Disconnect the battery
Remove the engine together with the gearbox
Separate the engine from the gearbox
Remove the ancillary drive belt idler pulley
Remove the ignition coils
Disconnect the ignition coil wiring
Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation hose
Disconnect the connector(s) from the solenoid valve
Remove the inlet valve timing control solenoid valve
Remove the cylinder head cover
Removal sequence: (11 - 1)

Remove the starter motor


Remove the oil sump
Remove the oil strainer
Remove the cylinder head front cover
Remove the cylinder head bolts
Timing chain: removal/installation
General
Before disconnecting the battery cable, check the audio system security code

Removal
Disconnect the battery
Remove the engine together with the gearbox
Separate the engine from the gearbox
Remove the ancillary drive belt idler pulley
Remove the ignition coils
Disconnect the ignition coil wiring
Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation hose
Disconnect the connector(s) from the solenoid valve
Turn the crankshaft to TDC for cylinder 1
Remove the inlet valve timing control solenoid valve
Remove the cylinder head cover

Remove the starter motor


Remove the oil sump
Check the camshaft timing marks
Remove the oil strainer
Remove the cylinder head front cover
Remove the cylinder head bolts

Remove the engine together with the gearbox
Separate the engine from the gearbox
Remove the ancillary drive belt idler pulley
Remove the ignition coils
Fit the flywheel locking tool
Disconnect the ignition coil wiring
Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation hose
Disconnect the connector(s) from the solenoid valve
Remove the inlet valve timing control solenoid valve
Remove the cylinder head cover
Removal sequence: (11 - 1)

Remove the crankshaft pulley

Remove the idler pulley bracket
Disconnect the ignition coil wiring
Remove the oil pump drive spacer
Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation hose
Disconnect the connector(s) from the solenoid valve
Remove the inlet valve timing control solenoid valve
Remove the cylinder head cover
Removal sequence: (11 - 1)

Remove the timing chain cover


Removal sequence: (A -> B -> C)
Remove the starter motor
Remove the oil sump
Remove the oil strainer
Remove the cylinder head front cover
Remove the cylinder head bolts
Timing chain: removal/installation
General
Before disconnecting the battery cable, check the audio system security code

Removal
Disconnect the battery
Remove the engine together with the gearbox
Separate the engine from the gearbox
Remove the ancillary drive belt idler pulley
Remove the ignition coils
Disconnect the ignition coil wiring
Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation hose
Disconnect the connector(s) from the solenoid valve
Remove the crankshaft oil seal and discard
Remove the inlet valve timing control solenoid valve
Cylinder block
Remove the cylinder head cover
Remove the dowel pins
Removal sequence: (11 - 1)
Set the inlet camshaft gearwheel to maximum advance
Proceed as follows:
Use a wrench to counterhold the inlet camshaft

Remove the starter motor


Remove the oil sump
Remove the oil strainer
Remove the cylinder head front cover
Remove the cylinder head bolts
Apply air pressure with an air gun as shown
Timing chain: removal/installation
General
Before disconnecting the battery cable, check the audio system security code

Removal
Disconnect the battery
Remove the engine together with the gearbox
Separate the engine from the gearbox
Remove the ancillary drive belt idler pulley
Remove the ignition coils
Until a click is heard from inside the inlet camshaft gearwheel
Disconnect the ignition coil wiring
Turn the camshaft clockwise to the most advanced position
Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation hose
Continue to apply air pressure
Disconnect the connector(s) from the solenoid valve
When the grooves are aligned, the camshaft is in its most advanced position
Remove the inlet valve timing control solenoid valve
Remove the cylinder head cover
Removal sequence: (11 - 1)

Compress the tensioner


Lock the chain tensioner with a locking pin
Remove the starter motor
Remove the oil sump
Remove the oil strainer
Remove the cylinder head front cover
Remove the cylinder head bolts

Fit the chain guide (17 - 24 Nm)
Refit the inlet camshaft gearwheel
Position the timing chain on the inlet camshaft gearwheel

General
Tighten the inlet camshaft gearwheel (79 - 88 Nm)
Before disconnecting

Remove the starter motor


Remove the oil sump
Tighten the exhaust camshaft gearwheel (79 - 88 Nm)
Remove the oil strainer
Fit the chain tensioner (8.5 Nm)
Remove the cylinder head front cover
Remove the locking pin from the chain tensioner
Remove the cylinder head bolts
Refit the oil pump drive spacer
Refit the crankshaft pulley
Refit the crankshaft pulley bolt
Return the inlet camshaft gearwheel to the most retarded position

General
Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the inlet camshaft also turns

Renew the O-ring (1)


Apply sealant as indicated (2 & 3)

Remove the starter motor


Remove the oil sump
Remove the oil strainer
Remove the cylinder head front cover
Remove the cylinder head bolts

Caution! Do not damage the cylinder head gasket


Temporarily secure the front cover
Timing chain: removal/installation
General
Tighten the bolts slightly (A -> B -> C)
Before disconnecting the battery cable, check the audio system security code

Removal
Disconnect the battery
Remove the engine together with the gearbox
Separate the engine from the gearbox
Remove the ancillary drive belt idler pulley
Remove the ignition coils
Disconnect the ignition coil wiring
Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation hose
Disconnect the connector(s) from the solenoid valve
Remove the inlet valve timing control solenoid valve
Refit the dowel pins
Remove the cylinder head cover
Removal sequence: (11 - 1)

Remove the starter motor


Remove the oil sump
Tighten
Remove the

Remove the inlet valve timing control solenoid valve
Remove the cylinder head cover

Refit the starter motor

Remove the starter motor


Remove the oil sump
Refit the inlet valve timing control solenoid valve (6 - 8 Nm)
Remove the oil strainer
Reconnect the connector to the solenoid valve
Remove the cylinder head front cover
Reconnect the positive crankcase ventilation hose
Remove the cylinder head bolts
Reconnect the ignition coil wiring
Refit and connect the ignition coils
Refit the ancillary drive belt idler pulley (25 - 31 Nm)
