CONDENSATION

A steam condenser employed in a steam power plant is to handle

36000kg /h of dry & saturated steam at 50oC. The outer and inner
diameter of tubes are 25mm & 22.5mm respectively . The cooling water
enters the tubes at 15oC, flows with an average velocity of 2m/s and
leaves at 25oC. If heat transfer coefficient on steam side is 5000W/m2
K, make calculations for
a. Mass flow rate of water and number of tubes required for water flow
b. O.A.H.T.C & Heat transfer area
c. Number of tube passes if length of each tube per pass is not to
exceed 2.5m.

Ignore thermal resistance of wall material and assume that steam

losses only its latent heat which is equal to 2375 kJ/kg

Thermo-physical properties of water at mean bulk temp of 20oC are

density = 998.8 kg/m3; sp. Heat 4186J/kg K;
kinematic viscosity = 1x10-6 m2/s; thermal conductivity = 0.6W/m K
• From energy balance,
• Heat gained by water = heat lost by steam
• Mc Cw (tc2 –tc1) = ms λ
• Mc x 4.186x (25-15)=(36000/3600) x 2375
• Mc = 567.36kg/s

• Mass flow rate through each tube =ρ A v

• = 998.8 x (πx0.0225 2)/4 x 2
• = 0.7938kg/s
• No. of tubes = 567.36/ 0.7938 = 715
• Re No =Re = 4m/µ π do
• = 44997
• Pr = 6.97
• Nu = 264
• hi= 7040 W/m2 K

• LMTD = 29.72

• Q = U A LMTD

• A = 2375x104/(2795 x 29.72)
• = 285.95m2
• Ao = N πdo L
• Length = 285.95/ 715xπx 0.025

• No. of pass = 5.095/2.5

(a) For condensing conditions, compare the condensation rate
when a 6.5cm diameter and 1.25 m long pipe is kept (i)
horizontally (ii) vertically. Assume that other conditions remain
same.
(b) For condensing conditions, compare the values of convective
heat transfer coefficients over a pipe of diameter with that of two
pipes having same total circumference when both pipes are
horizontal and parallel.
