Algebra of Sets EXAM

The document summarizes the key concepts in algebra of sets: complementation, intersection, union, difference, and exclusive union. It provides examples of each using Venn diagrams to illustrate sets of numbers. It then presents a word problem about a survey of computer science students at St. Joseph College involving the sports of basketball, volleyball, and football, and poses three questions about the numbers of students that play certain combinations of these sports or none at all.

ALGEBRA OF SETS

1) Complementation:
The complement of set A, A1 is a set composed of the elements of universal set U but
not elements of set A.

Given: U = { a ,b ,c , d ,e , f , g ,h , i }
A = { b ,e , g , i } ; Find A
A1= { a ,c , d , f , h }

By Venn Diagram

U A a

D a, g, b c

f ei

2) Intersection:
The intersection of sets A and B, A∩B is a set composed of elements of both sets A and
B.

Given: U = { 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 , 9 }
A = { 3,4,5,6 , 7 }
B = { 1,2,3,4,5 , 6 }

By Venn Diagram
U A B

6 2

A∩B = { 3,4,5 , 6 }

3) Union:
The union of sets A and B, AUB is a set composed of elements that belong to set A or B
or both sets A and B.

Given: U = { 1,2,3,4,5 , 6,7,8,9 }

4) Difference:
The difference of sets A and B is composed of the elements of set A but not elements of
set B.

Given: U = { 1,2,3,4,5 , 6,7,8,9 }

A = { 3,4,5 , 6,7 }

5) Exclusive Union:
The exclusive union of sets A and B, AUB is a set composed of the elements of sets A and
B, but not both set A and set B.

Given: U = { 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 }
A = { 3,4,5,6,7 }

A survey of 80 Computer Science students of St. Joseph College of Quezon City produced the
following results:

They played three (3) sports namely;

a) Basketball
b) Volleyball
c) Football

1) 29 students play football

2) 43 students play volleyball
3) 15 students play basketball and volleyball
4) 10 students play all sports
5) 31 students play basketball
6) 12 students play football and basketball
7) 15 students play volleyball and football

QUESTIONS:

A) How many students play none of the sports?

B) How many students play volleyball only?
C) How many students play basketball and volleyball but not football?
