Example

Design a simply supported ribbed slab subject to a UDL spanning 8m for

a retail store.

Uniformly Distributed Load

Applied

Reinforcement in the
(bottom) tension Zone

REAL SLAB (SIMPLY SUPPORTED, ONE WAY)

Structures E2 1
Design parameters (general)

Reinforcement yield strength fy =500 N/mm2

(reminder fd =fy/1.15 =0.87fy =435 N/mm2

Concrete strength C 30/35 fck =30 N/mm2

The above parameters are both decided by the Design Engineer,

although fy is generally standard.

fck would be the same thoughout the job

Structures E2 2
There are then specific parameters for this slab:

Cover 20mm
Cover depends upon location

Reinforcement diameter 20mm (estimated, may change)

Bar diameter depends upon member size and loading and is ‘guessed
at this stage.

Structures E2 3
Structures E2 4
Imposed load
Eurocode guidance: 4kN/m2
Eurocode guidance gives a MINIMUM imposed load of 4 kN/m2 for a
retail store.

Dead Load
Finishes (screeds, carpets etc): Allow 1 kN/m2
(designers decision/estimate)
Self weight: Significant load, but depends upon the slab thickness

Structures E2 5
Beam Thickness

In order to establish the loads, we need to estimate a suitable slab

thickness.

For this we use span to depth (L/d) ratios.

For a simply supported slab L/d=25
This is a very crude estimate and usually conservative.

In this case: L/d =8000/d =25 Henc e d=8000/25 =320mm

Structures E2 6
Effective depth

Strictly speaking this is the ‘effective depth’ of the slab, giving an overall
depth:
h =d +c over +φ/2 =320 +20 +20/2 =350mm

This is an ESTIMATE. As the designer Ialways work to an overall depth

rounded to 25mm.
Using a ribbed slab Iwill try a 400mm deep slab with a thickness
between ribs of 75mm. Ribs to be 100mm wide at 400mm centres

These are all MY decisions, later calculations will tell me if it is a correct

decision. (if Iam wrong Isimply have to re-do the calculations)

Structures E2 7
75mm

325mm

150 100 150

400mm

If h =400, d=400 – 20 – 20/2 =370mm

Structures E2 8
Loads

We can now calculate the loads on the slab:

Characteristic Loads (per rib width):

Dead Load: Self:25 x 0.075 x 0.4 (slab flange, in m) =0.75 kN/m/rib

Self:25 x 0.325 x 0.1 (rib, in m) =0.813 kN/m/rib
Finishes 1.0 x 0.4 =0.4 kN/m/rib
Total dead =1.96 kN/m/rib

Imposed Load: 4 x 0.4 =1.6 kN/m/rib

Note: Self weight =0.75 + 0.813 =1.56 kN/m/rib

Rectangular slab self would be 25 x 0.4 x 0.4 =4 kN/m/rib (> 100% more)

Structures E2 9
Ultimate load

(1.35 x DL) +(1.5 x IL)

(1.35 x 1.96) +(1.5 x 1.6) =5.05 kN/m/rib

We are now ready to start the design!

Structures E2 10
Analysis

In this case the analysis is very simple.

M max =WL2/8 =5.05 x 82/8 =40.4 kNm/rib width

Vmax =WL/2 =5.05 x 8/2 =20.2 kN/rib width

Design
𝑑
𝑧 = [1 + √1 − 3.53𝐾] 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑎𝑛 𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑙𝑖𝑚𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑓 0.95𝑑
2

𝑀
Where: 𝐾= (work in N and mm)
𝑏𝑑 2 𝑓 𝑐𝑘

40.4 𝑥 106
𝐾= = 0.025 (≤ 0.167)
400 𝑥 3702 x 30

𝑑
𝑧 = [1 + √1 − 3.53𝑥 0.025] = 0.98 𝑑 ≤ 0.95𝑑
2

Therefore in this case z =0.95d =351mm

Structures E2 12
Check the position of the neutral axis

x =2.5(d-z) =2.5 x (370 – 351)= 47.5 <75mm – NA is in the flange

The tension reinforcement required can now be calculated as if the

slab were a conventional rectangular slab from:
𝑀
𝐴𝑠 =
𝑓𝑦𝑑𝑧

40.4 𝑥 106
𝐴𝑠 = = 264 𝑚𝑚2/𝑟𝑖𝑏
0.87 𝑥 500 𝑥 351

This is the required reinforcement, A sreq

Structures E2 13
1 – T20 =314mm2

Reinforcement provided =314mm2/rib

This is the reinforcement provided, A sprov

This completes the design for the required reinforcement.

End Span: K1=1.3

Modified L/d =23.3 x 1 x 0.875 x 1.19 x 0.8 =19.41

Actual L/d =8000/370 =21.6 >19.41 FAIL

Increase reinforcement to 2 – T16 bars (402mm2)

Structures E2 17
Revised Reinforcement provided =402mm2/rib

𝐴 𝑠,𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣
𝐾3 = ≤ 1.5 𝐾3 = 402 = 1.53 ≤ 1.5 − use 1.5
𝐴 𝑠,𝑟𝑒𝑞 264

(Ribbed slab/Tee beam modification factor =0.8 as before)

Modified L/d =23.3 x 1 x 0.875 x 1.5 x 0.8 =24.46

Actual L/d =8000/370 =21.6 <24.46 PASS

Structures E2 20
Since this is GREATER than the applied shear stress (0.339 N/mm2) the
