I. Introductory Concept
Water and electricity are one of the commodities that we pay every
month. These two commodities are indispensable in everyday living.
Appliances cannot function without electricity while we cannot cook without
water and even in brushing our teeth. Electric and water meter reading is
important to monitor our monthly consumption in these commodities. By doing
this, we can think of ways on how to lessen our consumptions. In this activity
sheet, the pupils will be able to read and interpret electric and water meter
readings.

II. Learning Skills from the MELC

Reads and interprets electric and water meter readings. (M6MEIVd-
100)

III. Concept Building

Electric meters have four or five dials. Each dial is labeled with
numbers from 0 to 9 and has one hand or pointer (moving in a clockwise or
counter clockwise direction) that indicates the current reading of that dial.
Reading the meter dials from left to right, draw the exact position of the hand
on each dial.

• If the dial hand is between two numbers, record the lower number.
For example, if the hand is between 5 and 6, this dial is reading 5.

• If the dial hand is pointing directly at a number, look at the dial to

right. If the dial on the right has not yet passed 0, record the lower number for
the dial in question. In the example below, the dial on the far left is still reading
5 as the dial to the right has not yet passed 0 and is still recording 9.

• When you call to give us the meter reading, read out the numbers
from left to right.
1st dial between 5 and 6
2nd dial on 9
3rd dial between 0 and 1
4th dial between 3 and 4
5th dial between 7 and 8

This meter is reading 59037.

Water meters have a digital reading just like the odometer in your car.
They are 5 or 6 digit meters. From your digital meter record the first 5 or 6
numbers from left to right, do not include the shaded digit(s) and simply write.

0 0 0 1 2 3 4 5 6

Reading is – 000123

IV. Activity:

Activity 1
Determine the reading for each electric meter example shown below.
Activity 2

Write the water consumption in each.

Activity 3

sheet, the pupils will be able to solve electric and water meter readings.

II. Learning Skills from the MELC

Solves routine and non-routine problems involving electric and water
consumption. (M6MEIVd-101)

III. Concept building

To compute for water or electric consumption for a particular period of
time, simply subtract the previous reading from the present reading.

IV. Activity:

Activity 1
Read and analyze each problem. Then answer the questions below.
1. The electric meter reading on February was 5829.4 kwh. What was the
electrical consumption if the following month’s reading was 5641 kwh?

2. The present meter reading shown in Mrs. Ramos watt-hour meter is

6512.9 kwh. What was the last reading if the family used 42 kwh?

3. Mr. Jose’s family consumed 150 kwh for a month, if their previous reading
was 31748 kwh, what is their present meter reading?

4. Last June Ana’s electric meter reading was 4945 kwh. The following
month, the reading was increased by 65 kwh. What was the reading of the
following month?

5. A 100-watt electric range is used for 2 ½ hours. How many kwh was used?

Activity 2
Read and analyze each problem. Then answer the questions below.
1. The last reading in Mrs. Guarino’s house is 482 m 3 and this month’s
reading is 488 m3. How many cubic meters of water will Mr. Guarino
pay for?

2. The receipt shows that Miss Romero’s family used only 9 m 3 of water.
The last reading was 596 m3. What is the present reading?

3. At the end of February, Peter read the water meter as 777. If the
previous reading was 444, how many cubic meters of water was
consumed?

4. Aling Rosa’s last meter reading was 0658 m 3 and her present reading
is 0752 m3. If the cost per cubic meter is Php. 5.50, how much did she
pay?

5. At the end of December, Maria read the water meter as 481. If the
previous reading was 349, how many cubic meters of water was
consumed?

Activity 3
Solve.
A. A rectangular swimming pool 8 m long, 7 m wide, and 2 m deep is filled
with water.
a) How many cubic meters is needed to fill it?
b) The meter reading before the pool was filled was 3804. What was the
meter reading after?

B. Below is a list of some appliances and their wattage. (Wattage –

number of watts needed to operate them for 1 hour)
Appliance Wattage
Flat iron 1000 W
Washing Machine 180 W
Electric Stove 2200 W
Compact Disc Player 270 W
Sewing Machine 75 W
Refrigerator 250 W
Stand Fan 50 W
a) How many watts is used by a washing machine for 2 hours and 15
minutes? If you use the washing machine 4 times a week, how many
kilowatt hour (kwh) is used per week?
