MidSem Autumn 2021-22

This document is a mid-semester examination for a civil engineering course on strength of materials. It contains two questions - the first asks students to define terms and draw shear force and bending moment diagrams, the second concerns displacement calculations for a loaded rod and beam assembly and proving stresses under pure shear. Students are instructed to replace P with the last three digits of their faculty number in the questions.

Department of Civil Engineering

Mid-Semester Examination: Autumn 2021-22

CEA 1120: Strength of Materials

Attempt all the questions. Max. marks: 25

Notations have their usual meanings. Time Duration: 1 hr.
Extra 15 min will be provided for uploading the documents.
Failing which 1 mark/min delay shall be deducted.

Q 1a Define any four of the following terms: [4x1]

i) Plasticity
ii) Stiffness
iii) True Stress
iv) Shear strain
v) Poisson’s ratio

Q 1b Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam given in [6]
Fig. 1.

Q 2a The assembly shown in Fig. 2 consists of a steel hollow tube AB having a [6]
cross-sectional area of 400 mm2. An aluminum rod having a diameter of 10
mm is attached to a rigid collar and passes through the tube. If a tensile load
of P is applied to the rod, determine the displacement of the end C of the
rod. Take Est = 200 GPa, Eal = 70 GPa.

Q 2b Prove that the stresses acting on a material subjected to pure shear are [3+6]
complementary in nature.
Also, for given state of stress (in MPa), determine the transformed normal
and shear stresses at a plane a-a (Fig. 3)

Replace P with last three digits in your faculty number. e.g. Faculty no.: 00xyz123; P = 123.
