Module 7 - Pumps and Pumping Systems

This document discusses different types of pumps used in water supply systems. It describes reciprocating pumps, centrifugal pumps, and jet pumps. Reciprocating pumps use a back-and-forth motion and include lift pumps and plunger pumps. Centrifugal pumps have an impeller that rotates to boost water pressure and include submersible pumps. Jet pumps are mounted above ground, use suction from a jet ejector, and can be used in shallow or deep wells. All pumps need to be primed with water before operation to prevent damage from dry running.

PUMPS &

PUMPING SYSTEMS
PUMPS FOR WATER SUPPLY
WHAT IS A PUMP?
A pump is a device that
moves liquids or gases,
by mechanical action.

Used mainly in the

plumbing system to
boost water pressure

COMMONLY USED PUMPS
IN WATER SUPPLY

RECIPROCATING PUMPS CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS JET PUMPS

• Operates with a to-and- • Impeller rotates inside • Also uses and impeller
fro motion boosting water pressure • Pump is connected to
• Uses positive • Needs electricity long pipes underground
displacement • Pump casing must be full • The impeller rotates
• Manual or powered of water to operate creating vacuum
pressure

RECIPROCATING PUMP TYPES

LIFT PUMP PLUNGER PUMPS

DEEP-WELL PISTON PUMPS
• Simplest form • Can convey any liquid
• A “plunger” is driven • Similar to lift pumps but
• A shallow piston moves
backwards and forwards for deep wells
up and down creating
suction • Industrial applications with • The piston is lowered
deep, where the water is
• Locally called as ‘Poso’ high-pressure system

CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS
HOW DO THEY WORK?
1. Liquid enters through the
suction side
2. The impeller moves the liquid as
it rotates
3. Water exits out the pressure
side with added velocity.

SUBMERSIBLE PUMPS
A SPECIAL KIND OF CENTRIFUGAL PUMP

• Submerged underwater

• Pushes water to the surface from

underneath

• Can also be used in pumping

water out in flooded basements

JET PUMPS

• Mounted above ground

• Non-submersible

• Can be used in shallow wells and

deep wells

JET PUMPS
HOW DO THEY WORK? Shallow well Deep well

• Mounted above ground

• Non-submersible

• Can be used in shallow

wells and deep wells

IMPORTANT REMINDER
Centrifugal pumps and jet pumps
need to primed before use because
otherwise the pump will get
damaged.

When we say primed, it means the

pump should be filled with water
before operating. Dry running a
pump can lead to a surge in
pressure, flow or overheating that
will instigate a pump failure.
