Given That You Have The Capital To Build and Establish Your Own Agricultural

The student prefers to establish a horticulture business growing fruits and vegetables as they can be grown with basic knowledge and provide a sustainable food source. The future of farming in the Philippines is at risk as agricultural lands are increasingly converted to residential and commercial use, reducing younger generations' engagement in farming. The video shows banana harvesting and packing process with engineering systems like a cableway train and conveyor belts that allow large-scale and efficient production.

1. Given that you have the capital to build and establish your own agricultural

business, in what branch of crop production do you prefer? Explain the details.

The branch of crop production I prefer is Horticulture which is growing and

caring for plants like fruits, flowers, and vegetables because managing them to

grow can be done even if I only have the basic knowledge in crop production.

Growing fruits and vegetable is much more important especially now in this time of

the pandemic because you can grow it even in your backyard in which it is your

advantage once you have a moderate size of the lot for your plants, the fruit or

vegetable that has grown from it can be your food or you can sell them in your

area so that your neighborhood does not need to go to the market anymore. They

grow many at the same time where even if you already harvested the previous

fruits and vegetables in the plant tree, they will still grow when it is already its

season to grow. But in business, you must know what is the most likely to be

bought in your area, what does sells well because you cannot just grow any plant

and sell them without knowing if they will be in demand or not. Additionally, is that

you must know how to do marketing, if you are not the only one who’s selling the

same kind of fruits and vegetables, you can’t put your goods at a higher price, but

stay in line with what others have so that it won’t become a deficit in your business

capital and incomes.

Of course, an agriculture business does not still in a small portion of the lot,

but enough space for you to be able to move around checking all your plants, to

know if they are growing just right, is there any pesticide that keeps on destroying

your plants, is it just right on the time of the year to grow them where climate

change will not affect and destroy them because planting plants does stay there,

we grow them and care for them in which its fruit or the crop must be edible, not

containing any pesticides, toxic chemicals, harvested rightly, not to ripen, so that

when the crops of fruit and vegetables are harvested and time to transport, it’ll

reach consumers just right even before it gone bad. That is why some businesses

own a greenhouse that helps grow plants instead of just keeping them outside.

Growing and taking care of the plants isn’t that hard as long as you do the

process right and keep them from being destroyed. And as a business owner of

the agriculture business, this crop production is sustainable in its production, no

matter how long the process and period of growing the plants, its production is

continuous, again, because it is one of our food resources, losing its production

will affect many people, families, with their everyday food especially to people who

are not that capable of purchasing expensive meats for their meals. And even with

meat, the presence of fruits and vegetables in the meal is still important. And fruits

and vegetables in our meals are healthier than too much consumption of meat.

2. What is the future of farming in the Philippines?

Based on my own opinion and observation within my area where farming is

still can be seen now but the thought of leaving it behind is there, I think farming

soon will continuously be at danger to dissipate. Just like what has been discussed

before, many agricultural lands are being converted to residential and commercial
lands in which these agricultural lands is where we farm, and as I have

experience, it is true that agricultural farms lands are now to be converted to

residential and commercial lands because in our family, one of our agricultural

farmlands of rice fields is already put on lease as commercial land and the other is

agricultural land of banana and mango farm trees and already at lease as

agricultural lands but many of the interested buyers have planned on building

malls or housing subdivision.

Even in a small area, or a small portion of agricultural lands are to

residential and commercial lands, farming will slowly decrease and dissipate

shortly. In addition, in this modern generation, millennials and other adults are

more focused on the innovations of technology where agriculture, farming is not

part of their lives, like they benefit from it but majority might have never thought

about doing something for our agriculture for our farming to continue healthily.

Many of them think that farming is below their league, and sometimes it was like

they are embarrassed in doing and being involved with farming that’s why they

keep themselves from farming.

There might still be farming after a few years, but not many as what we

have before, not as much as important on what it was before. But then, we will

never know what the future holds, especially now that we are in a pandemic state,

food is the most essential thing we need, and farming is the busy one producing

what we need to survive the pandemic and the continuous rising of prices of goods

that adds on the challenges of many families to provide food for their families.

3. In the attached video link, note the presence of agricultural economics and

engineering in the featured banana plantation.

The attached video link shows the process of harvesting bananas up to how it

is packaging to ready for transporting it to markets and consumers. In the video, in

the start of harvesting the bananas, to know if the banana is ready to harvest, they

have this long metal object that has a fixed size of the distance in the tines of it

where they use it to measure the banana size, and once it is known to be ready to

harvest they use foam padding that was inserted in every between of bunch of

banana, it was cut from the stem and transferred using what they called cableway

system train to the center where the bananas will be packed. Based on my

observation on the video, the cableway system train was lined from in between the

field of banana trees up to the center.

Right from the harvesting of bananas, it is noticeable that the farm or field of

banana trees is exceptionally a big land, many trees are planted that’s why the

production of banana is sustainable and is produced faster and a lot. When the

bananas were moved, the foam padding was removed and every bunch of the

banana was cut with the stem and washed with the chlorinated water where it kills

bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that is harmful to the banana. After it

was washed, the stems in the bananas were removed and are cut into 5 to 7 pieces

of banana (fingers, they call), and then removed from the water and placed on tray

scales where they are weighed for it maximizes the amount will be put in the carton

or packaging. But before being transferred to the carton for packaging, each banana

bunch (the 5 to 7 pieces of banana in each bunch), the sticker of the DOLE company

is stick to it and they received treatment so that the banana will preserve its

freshness before it reaches its consumers. After, they are now being packed

organized into the carton where they use perforated materials that allows the banana

to ripen even they are inside the carton. And when the carton has already its
maximum amount weight of the bananas, each box where stock in the moving

pallets and every pallet filled with boxes of bananas has control and traceability

where the pallet has an identification code to sustain every corner board are

recycled, then each pallet is loaded into the containers that take the bananas to a

ship at ports.

The corner board used in the pallets where recycled, which is eco-friendly

from previously used cardboard or other recycled materials like plastics. Going back

from where the bananas were brought from the farm, the center, as seen, from the

water tank conveyor moving to the trays, the center is big enough for them to be able

to have each station of the process, not overlapping from one station to another, and

instead of move manually, like the bananas are moved using a cart by some workers

from one place to another, they have the machine, the conveyor they use to let the

banana move and flow from one to another place. The same with the station where

the bananas are weighed and packed, each station has enough space for the

bananas and the workers as well. In conclusion for the whole process and place, the

farm of bananas and the center where the banana is processed to packaging, is a

big land, for sure, the land is owned already by the agricultural business owner of the

banana farmland even before they started planting and producing bananas or they

bought the land that is already banana farmland where they continue it as a big

business of them. Each is well processed where the production is fast because they

have the cableway system and the conveyor, which is already a big help for them to

be able to produce a lot of banana crops without having any trouble trying to process

them manually without the train and conveyor.
