1. In a class experiment, Miguel rolls one ordinary 6-sided die repeatedly.

Keeping track of each

number he rolls, he decides to stop as soon as one number is rolled three times. Miguel stops
after the 12th roll, and the sum of these rolls is 47. Which number occurred for the third time?
(An ordinary 6-sided die has the numbers from 1 through 6 on its sides)

Understand the problem

At a 12th roll, Miguel stopped as a one number was rolled three times. What is
this one number? Note that these rolls are equal to 47 when all added.

Devise a plan
Since it has a 12 rolls, Only:
- 4 number appears twice
- 1 number appears once
- 1 number appears thrice
Or
2+2+2+2+1+3=12

By that, we will assume that:

x = the number that appears once
y = the number that appears thrice

Carry out the plan

Baseline is every roll twice (21x2=42).

42 - (x-y) = 47 -------------(Since x and y need to be only rolled once, we will subtract it.)
- (x-y) = 47-42
- (x-y) = 5
-x+y=5
- 1 + 6 = 5 ------------------(from 1-6, only -1 + 6 = 5)

Therefore, x = 1 and y = 6. Number six is the number that appears thrice.

Applying the the device plan, 2+2+3+3+4+4+5+5+1+6 = 47

Look back
Afterall, the solution shows that the number who occurred for the third time is six.
Therefore, Miguel stops at a 12th roll after the number six was rolled three times.
