MALAYSIAN STUDIES 2/MPU1113U1

The spirit of Chinese nationalism for independence of Malaya.

Introduction

There is no doubt that the Chinese are playing a major role in the independence of Malaya.
The Chinese have been trying to help the Malays toiling liberate Malaya from British rule.
Among the Alliance's help the Malays are the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA).

In the 40s, MCA set up to help Malaya's independence. The organization is led by the
famous Chinese figure Tun Tan Cheng Lock. He has sacrificed a lot in convincing the
Chinese to favour the Malays.

The Role Of The Chinese Nation

Tun Tan Cheng Lock had explained that the MCA was formed because the Malayan -loyal
Chinese community suffered under the state of emergency, which not only threatened their
lives but also the basic interests of the Chinese community. Furthermore, the loyalty and
sincerity of the Chinese community towards the country is also questionable.

 Resources:
The MCA has taken immediate steps to provide housing and help relocate the
Chinese community to new villages. Furthermore, MCA has also provided food,
medical and financial assistance. After the resettlement, MCA has also helped
provide electricity and water facilities for the new villages.

 Articulation:
Chinese newspapers are believed to grow in tandem with the development of the
Chinese community life in Malaysia. This aids the newspapers to articulate the
important events in their news reporting, and play significant roles as the agent of
change in accordance with time.

 Unity:
MCA have took a big step by join forces with other parties such as MIC and UMNO
with the same noble goal. On the response, MCA always support the actions taken
in the path of liberating Malaysia. Even in different working environment, MCA
always loyal in every action taken so as not to deviate from the original purpose that
brings harmony.

Summary
The collaboration has received strong support and won 94 of the 124 seats contested. This
decision has laid the foundation for a 3-party coalition called then “Alliance Party” that will
be formed in the future. Following this consensus, it led to cooperation in the struggle for
national independence on 31st August 1957.
