Section 2

Topic of lesson: The capacitor, and its uses, types, and values.

Type of lesson: Theory lesson

Methodology: Explanation, question and answer and demonstration.

General Objectives: At the end of this lesson student should:

1. be knowledgeable in what capacitor is, its uses, types and values associated with
it.
Specific Objectives: At the end of this lesson student should be able to:
1. State the operation of the capacitor, and the values associated with it.
2. Identify applications of the capacitor in relation to AC and DC requirements.

Instructional Materials:
1. Projector
2. Whiteboard
3. Markers
4. Real objects (Capacitors).

References Book:
o E.L. Donnelly Electrical Installation Theory and Practice (Third Edition)
o Electrical Circuit Fundamentals – Thomas L. Floyd (Prentice Hall Electronics)

Previous Knowledge: the students were already thought;

o What is a Series circuit?
o What is a Parallel circuit?
o What is Ohm’s Law?
o What is current?
o What is voltage?
o How to calculate the total resistance, voltage and current in a circuit.

2
Introduction of lesson:
Good morning student, this is the first time we meet, and we will be having a very
interesting lesson, can anyone recall the topic of that lesson? For Today’s lesson we will
have an equally if not more interesting lesson which will be based on capacitors.
Recall; students were were already thought,

o What is a Series circuit?

o What is a Parallel circuit?
o What is Ohm’s Law?
o What is current?
o What is voltage?
o How to calculate the total resistance, voltage and current in a circuit.

However, today we will be looking at what is a capacitor, its uses, values and types.
This topic is very essential as it helps you to understand the basic of how the capacitor
applicable to electrical circuitry.

3
Application

o A question will be posted on white board asking students where a capacitive

circuit can be used.
o A follow up question will ask why its applicable in the answer stated above.

Summary/Student Evaluation
o Some circuits will be drawn on the board and the students will be ask to calculate
the total capacitance of the circuits in their books, and also draw the equivalent
circuit.
o Then the teacher will go around and mark the answers.
o The teacher will then work out the questions on the board and draw the
equivalent circuit.

Conclusion

a. Next class we will be looking at the topics of capacitor color code and calculating
capacitance in series circuits so please read up before coming to the next class.
b. Teacher will mark register
c. The teacher will dismiss the class

What is a capacitor?
A Capacitor is a storage device to store electrical charges and release it as it is required
by the circuit. In this way, a capacitor is a little like a battery. Although they work in
completely different ways, capacitors and batteries both store electrical energy.
Capacitors are widely used in electronic circuits to perform variety of tasks, such as
smoothing, filtering, bypassing, energy storage etc.

Two Types of Capacitor

 Electrolytic Capacitors are generally used when large capacitance values are
required. Electrolytic Capacitors are generally used in DC power supply circuits
due to their large capacitance’s and small size to help reduce the ripple voltage or
for coupling and decoupling applications.
 Ceramic Capacitors or Disc Capacitors types of capacitors generally have a 3-
digit code printed onto their body to identify their capacitance value in pico-
farads. These are the most commonly used

Capacitor in Action
When you connect a capacitor to a source, here's what happens:
• The plate on the capacitor that attaches to the negative terminal of the battery
accepts electrons that the battery is producing.

6
• The plate on the capacitor that attaches to the positive terminal of the battery loses
electrons to the battery.

Applications
 Energy storage
 Timing
 Coupling or DC Blocking
 Decoupling/By-Pass Capacitors
 Capacitor as a filter
