3 INTRODUCTION

A Multimedia System is a system capable of processing multimedia

data and applications. It is characterized by the processing, storage,
generation, manipulation and rendition of Multimedia information.
Common Multimedia elements are Text, image, audio, video, and
animation are the five multimedia elements.

Multimedia simply can be defined as the use of multiple forms of

media to present information. It is an integration of different forms
of media such as text, audio, video, images, and still or animated
3
graphics with the computer technology. Initially, the term
multimedia was used in the context of media devices such as audio
tapes, sometimes supplemented by videos. However, as technology
evolved so does digital media. From multiple devices support, it all
comes down to a single integrated device and the computer plays a
central role in the present day multimedia paradigm.

4 LITERATURE REVIEW
According to Reisman (1994), the multimedia computing is the
rapidly using technology to present the data in the audio and video
contexts rather than in normal text and graphics format. In the
present days the multimedia systems are using to display the
presentations of data as a multimedia content. These systems are
capable of processing the multimedia data such as audio, video,
graphics, text and images. These systems having the window-based
display with bitmapped processing. The images and the videos
presented through these displays are modified by using the different
multimedia technologies like image processing, video compression,
visualization etc. The present multimedia systems use the elements
like audio, video, storage devices such as CD-ROMS, DVD, Hard disk
to get the synchronization of multimedia contents animation, text,
video, audio.

According to Different multimedia technologies are used in

developing the multimedia content like audio, text, images and
video. There are different approaches using in each context, like for
displaying the image several processes like jpeg encoding, gif

4
encoding and jpg encoding etc. And for video we use the mpeg-4
technology, and digital video technology is used. Similarly different
approaches are used in editing graphics and animations etc. The
technologies used for animations and graphics are different from
the technologies used for editing of text, audio and video. In the
presentation of general data as a multimedia data we need to us all
these technologies at one instance, because the data is the
combination of text, images, audio, video and more. (Fernando
Pereira, 1999)

The present multimedia is one the major field which is using in a

high extent in information industry, because in any information
related thing, there is a need of multimedia to present data. The
multimedia is given as by the name itself, combining two or more
media as one information. The multimedia concepts used in the
development of games in high extent because the games developed
depends on the graphics and animations, these concepts can be
designed by using the different software’s like Maya, 3D
max,3dsmax etc. this software are mainly using in the development
of visual effects and graphics animations etc. There is different
software which are used to display the images, audio, text and video.
The software like Adobe, Flash is used to edit or display the images,
text, audio, video in the required format. This application software
of multimedia containing different tools and each tool has its own
specification in developing, editing or displaying the information.
(Mahbub Rahman Syed, 2008)

Newspaper were perhaps the first mass communication medium to

employ Multimedia -- they used mostly text, graphics, and images.
Initially invented for telegraph, radio is now a major medium for
audio broadcasting. ... Television was the new media for the 20th
century.

5
The first truly digital media came into existence with the rise
of digital computers. Digital computers use binary code and Boolean
logic to store and process

Digital media is any form of media that uses electronic devices for
distribution. This form of media can be created, viewed, modified
and distributed via electronic devices. Digital media is commonly
used software, video games, videos, websites, social media, and
online advertising.

5 IMPORTANCE OF MULTIMEDIA SYSTEM

Multimedia motivates students to learn more languages through

audio, visual and animation support. It also helps create English
contexts since an important aspect of learning a language is
developing their grammar, vocabulary and knowledge of pragmatics
and genres.

The multimedia is a good way for communication because that can

easy to communicate and understand what they say. After that,
multimedia has animation, music, video and more of this. This can
easier to attract people to listen what you talking about.

6. MULTIMEDIA SYSTEM APPLICATIONS

Multimedia indicates that, in addition to text, graphics/drawings,

and photographs, computer information can be represented using
audio, video, and animation. Multimedia is used in:

6
6.1 EDUCATION

In the subject of education, multimedia is becoming increasingly

popular. It is often used to produce study materials for pupils and to
ensure that they have a thorough comprehension of various
disciplines. Edutainment, which combines education and
entertainment, has become highly popular in recent years. This
system gives learning in the form of enjoyment to the user

6.2 ENTERTAINMENT

The usage of multimedia in films creates a unique auditory and video

impression. Today, multimedia has completely transformed the art
of filmmaking around the world. Multimedia is the only way to
achieve difficult effects and actions.
The entertainment sector makes extensive use of multimedia. It’s
particularly useful for creating special effects in films and video
games. The most visible illustration of the emergence of multimedia
in entertainment is music and video apps. Interactive games become
possible thanks to the use of multimedia in the gaming business.
Video games are more interesting because of the integrated audio
and visual effects.
6.3 BUSINESS

Marketing, advertising, product demos, presentation, training,

networked communication, etc. are applications of multimedia that
are helpful in many businesses. The audience can quickly
understand an idea when multimedia presentations are used. It
gives a simple and effective technique to attract visitors’ attention
and effectively conveys information about numerous products. It’s
also utilized to encourage clients to buy things in business
marketing.

7
6.4 TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE

In the sphere of science and technology, multimedia has a wide

range of applications. It can communicate audio, films, and other
multimedia documents in a variety of formats. Only multimedia can
make live broadcasting from one location to another possible.
It is beneficial to surgeons because they can rehearse intricate
procedures such as brain removal and reconstructive surgery using
images made from imaging scans of the human body. Plans can be
produced more efficiently to cut expenses and problems.

6.5 FINE ARTS

Multimedia artists work in the fine arts, combining approaches

employing many media and incorporating viewer involvement in
some form. For example, a variety of digital mediums can be used
to combine movies and operas.
Digital artist is a new word for these types of artists. Digital
painters make digital paintings, matte paintings, and vector
graphics of many varieties using computer applications

6.6 ENGINEERING

Multimedia is frequently used by software engineers in computer

simulations for military or industrial training. It’s also used for
software interfaces created by creative experts and software
engineers in partnership. Only multimedia is used to perform all
the minute calculations.

7. COMPONENTS OF MULTIMEDIA SYSTEM

Multimedia consists of the following 5 components

8
7.1TEXT

Characters are used to form words, phrases, and paragraphs in the

text. Text appears in all multimedia creations of some kind. The
text can be in a variety of fonts and sizes to match the multimedia
software’s professional presentation. Text in multimedia systems
can communicate specific information or serve as a supplement to
the information provided by the other media.

7.2 GRAPHICS

Non-text information, such as a sketch, chart, or photograph, is

represented digitally. Graphics add to the appeal of the multimedia
application. In many circumstances, people dislike reading big
amounts of material on computers. As a result, pictures are more
frequently used than words to clarify concepts, offer background
information, and so on. Graphics are at the heart of any multimedia
presentation. The use of visuals in multimedia enhances the
effectiveness and presentation of the concept. Windows Picture,
Internet Explorer, and other similar programs are often used to see
visuals. Adobe Photoshop is a popular graphics editing program
that allows you to effortlessly change graphics and make them
more effective and appealing.

7.3 ANIMATIONS

A sequence of still photographs is being flipped through. It’s a set of

visuals that give the impression of movement. Animation is the
process of making a still image appear to move. A presentation can
also be made lighter and more appealing by using animation. In
multimedia applications, the animation is quite popular. The
following are some of the most regularly used animation viewing
programs: Fax Viewer, Internet Explorer, etc.

9
7.4 VIDEO

Photographic images that appear to be in full motion and are

played back at speeds of 15 to 30 frames per second. The term
video refers to a moving image that is accompanied by sound, such
as a television picture. Of course, text can be included in videos,
either as captioning for spoken words or as text embedded in an
image, as in a slide presentation. The following programs are
widely used to view videos: Real Player, Window Media Player, etc.

7.5 AUDIO

Any sound, whether it’s music, conversation, or something else.

Sound is the most serious aspect of multimedia, delivering the joy
of music, special effects, and other forms of entertainment. Decibels
are a unit of measurement for volume and sound pressure level.
Audio files are used as part of the application context as well as to
enhance interaction. Audio files must occasionally be distributed
using plug-in media players when they appear within online
applications and webpages. MP3, WMA, Wave, MIDI, and RealAudio
are examples of audio formats. The following programs are widely
used to view videos: Real Player, Window Media Player, etc

8. CHARACTERISTICS OF MULTIMEDIA SYSTEM

To deal with large amount of data Multimedia system characterized

by the following characters

10
8.1 FILE SYSTEM

File system must be efficient to meet the requirements of

continuous media. These media files requires very high-disk
bandwidth rates. Disks usually have low transfer rates and high
latency rates. To satisfy the requirements for multimedia data, disk
schedulers must reduce the latency time to ensure high bandwidth

8.2 FILE FORMATS THAT SUPPORT MULTIMEDIA

Multimedia data consists of a variety of media formats or file

representation including ,JPEG, MPEG, AVI, MID, WAV, DOC,
GIF,PNG, etc. AVI files can contain both audio and video data in a
file container that allows synchronous audio-with-video playback.
Like the DVD video format, AVI files support multiple streaming
audio and video. Because of restrictions on the conversion from
one format to the other, the use of the data in a specific format has
been limited as well.

8.3 INPUT/OUTPUT

In multimedia applications, the input and output should be

continuous and fast. Real-time recording as well as playback of data
are common in most of the multimedia applications which need
efficient I/O.

8.4 OPERATING SYSYTEM

The operating system must provide a fast response time for

interactive applications. High throughput for batch applications,
and real-time scheduling,

11
8.5 STORAGE AND MEMORY

Multimedia systems require storage for large capacity objects such

as video, audio, animation and images. Depending on the
compression scheme and reliability video and audio require large
amount of memory

8.6 NETWORK SUPPORT

It includes internet, intranet, LAN, WAN, ATM, Mobile telephony

and others. In recent years, there has been a tremendous growth of
multimedia applications on the internet like streaming video, IP
telephony, interactive games, teleconferencing, virtual world,
distance learning and so on. These multimedia networking
applications are referred as continuous-media applications and
require high communication latency. Communication Latency is the
time it takes for a data packet to be received by the remote
computer.
8.7 SOFTWARE TOOLS

For the development of multimedia applications, the various

software tools like programming languages, graphics software’s,
multimedia editing software’s scripting languages: authoring tools,
design software’s etc are required. In addition to these the device
drivers are required for interfacing the multimedia peripherals .
