Sample Problems

The document provides solutions to two problems involving flange couplings connecting shafts. [1] For a flange coupling connecting 50mm shafts, transmitting 30,000 kPa of torque at 650 rpm, the force on the coupling is calculated as 9.204 kN and the shearing stress in the 16mm bolts is 7.63 N/mm^2. [2] For a coupling connecting 30mm shafts transmitting 35 kW at 250 rpm, the shearing stress in the 13mm x 71.25mm key is calculated as 96,223 MPa.

KEYS AND COUPLINGS

(Lecture)
Problem # 1
A flange coupling is to connect two 50mm shafts. The thickness of the radial flange is 22mm. The
diameter circle that connects the flanges is 160mm with six 16mm bolts. If the outside diameter of the
flange coupling is 200mm and the shaft revolves at 650 rpm and the torsional stress in the shaft is
30,000KPa, determine:

Problem # 2
A flange coupling transmitting 35 KW at 250 rpm connects two 30mm shafts. The coupling’s hubs have
the same diameter of 70mm and thickness of 75mm. The key way is 5% shorter than the hubs thickness.
If the key is 13mm x 13mm in size, and there are ten 10mm bolts in a 90mm diameter circle, determine
the shearing stress in the key.
Given:
P = 35 KW N = 250 rpm
DS = 30 mm Thubs = 75 mm
Dhubs = 70 mm No. of bolts = 10 bolts

Lkey = 75 mm – 0.05(75 mm)
