Problems Solution

The document describes three problems related to mixing processes and mass balances. Problem 1 involves adding saturated salt solution to tomato juice to achieve 2% salt in the product. Problem 2 is determining the mass of each wine needed to blend three wines to achieve a target alcohol and sugar content. Problem 3 calculates the time required for a waste treatment tank to reach a minimum cell concentration given inlet and outlet flows.

Problems Solution

S 26% salt

Tomato juice flowing through a pipe at a rate of

100 kg/min is salted by adding saturated salt solution I P
(26% salt) to the pipeline at a constant rate. At what rate Mixer
should the saturated salt solution be added to provide 2% 100 kg/min 2% salt
salt in the product?

Solve for the amount of S to be added to the system.

Solution Solution
Overall balance: Solve for P using component balance
input =output + accumulation
P = 0.26/0.02 [S]
I + S = P units are kg/min
Substitute into overall balance and find S
Salt balance:
100 + S = 0.26/0.02 [S]
xsS = xPP kg of salt/min.
S = 8.33 kg/min

Problem 2 Solution to Problem 2

A winery produces a uniform sherry by blending three
wines with different alcohol and sugar contents. Given
the compositions of the three wines and the blend A
(product) below, determine the mass of each wine in the
B S
blend.
BLENDER
Mass % alcohol Mass % sugar C
Wine A 14.6 0.2
Wine B 16.7 1.0
Wine C 17.0 12.0
Blend 16.0 3.0

Soln. to problem 2 – page2 Soln. to problem 2 – page 3
Overall balance: input = output (accumulation = 0) A + B + C = 100 kg
A + B + C = S [all units in kg]
0.146 A + 0.167 B + 0.17 C = 16 kg
Component balances:
0.02 A + 0.01 B + 0.12 C = 3 kg
Alcohol (x) : xAA + xBB + xCC = xSS kg alcohol

Sugar (y) : yAA + yBB + yCC = ySS kg sugar A = 35.47 kg

B = 49.57 kg
C = 14.95 kg
Note: 3 equations and 4 unknowns, choose a basis
let S = 100 kg

Problem 3 Solution to problem 3

You have a 4,000,000 liter waste treatment tank with 2000 Solve for the time required to reach a cell mass of 1000 ppm
parts-per-million biological cells suspended in the water. Wastewater
enters the tank and flows to the over the opposite side. The inlet flow
rate is 20,000 kg/hr. The tank can be considered well stirred. Diagram:
Normally the biological cells that exit the waste treatment tank are F P
returned, however the return system has failed. If you can adequately
treat the wastewater as long as you have at least 1000 part-per-million Waste Treatment Tank
cells in the waste treatment tank. How long can you successfully treat
the wastewater?
The density of the wastewater is 1000 kg/m3 and is the same as the Given: F = P = 20,000 kg/hr ppm = kg dry cell
density of the water and cells in the waste treatment tank. (part-per- V = 4,000,000 L 1,000,000 kg water
million = kg dry cell material/1,000,000 kg water). You can ignore cell  = 1000 kg/m3
generation for this problem. x at t=0 is = 2000 ppm
