COURSE GUIDE for GENPHYS1 (GENERAL PHYSICS 1)

SY 2020-2021

INTRODUCTION

Learning physics is essential in our understanding and appreciation of our

physical world. Infrastructures, transportation, telecommunications, and many other
technological innovations owed its progress to physics. Physics is valued as the most
basic among the sciences, since all other fields (chemistry, geology, biology and other
natural sciences) need a thorough understanding of its basic and complex concepts
and principles.

I. COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

This is the first course in a two-semester series of introductory physics intended

for students enrolled in the STEM track of the K to 12 curriculum. This is given 2 units
course credits, thus it requires more of your time and effort. The course is designed to
enhance your understanding of the concepts and principles of mechanics of particles,
rigid bodies, and fluids; waves; and heat and thermodynamics using the methods and
concepts of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, graphical analysis, and basic calculus.

At the end of this course, you should be able to:

1. Solve, using experimental and theoretical approaches, multi-concept, rich-
content problems involving measurement, vectors, motion in 1D and 2D,
Newton’s Laws, Work, Energy, Center of Mass, momentum, impulse and
collisions; and

2. Solve, using experimental and theoretical approaches, multi-concept, rich

context problems using concepts from oscillations, fluids, and
thermodynamics.

V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

• To pass the subject, you must

1. Participate in asynchronous discussion forums.
2. Submit required performance task on time.
3. Take and pass the two summative tests per term.

On Asynchronous Discussion Forum

Asynchronous discussion forums are online discussions that happens

independent of time and space. In this Discussion Forum, you do not have to be online
simultaneously. You can read and contribute to the conversation on your own
schedule. You just have to open the Google Classroom where the topic for discussion
is posted at your most convenient time or during our offline class schedules.
One discussion forum will be posted per module. You will be graded based on
the completeness and quality of your answers. It is preferred that you based your
answers on experience, reasoning, and readings. Avoid repeating the answers of your
classmates, however you may enrich it.
Please bear in mind to be courteous and respectful at all times.

On Performance Task

A performance task is a learning activity or in some way a form of assessment

where you demonstrate your knowledge, understanding and proficiency on the topic.
It may include but is not limited to a product or a performance that serves as evidence
of learning.
In this subject, you are required to submit 1 worksheet per module and 1
output/project per term. A separate Assignment Guide will be given to serve as guide
in doing your assigned task.

Course Guide in General Physics 1 5|Page

On Examinations

Two (2) summative are required from you every term. As of this writing, NO
face to face interaction is allowed. So, prepare to take the summative tests online. On
the other hand, all automated quizzes are not graded. However, you are encouraged
to answer these for review purposes.

VI. GRADING SYSTEM

ASSESSMENT TASK Weight in %

A. Performance Tasks 40
B. Summative Tests (2 per term) 50
C. Interaction/Participation 10

In CMULHS we adhere to the philosophy of ’Academic excellence through

hardwork and noble virtues’. As CMULHS students, you are expected to live by our
philosophy. As such, you aim for academic excellence and value intellectual honesty.
Do your best in carrying out the activities and performance task required and achieve
success through your own effort.
