MODULE 4 - INDIGENOUS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE PHILIPPINES
Indigenous Knowledge System. During early times, Filipinos tried to invent different tools that will help them in their
everyday lives. They even developed alternative ideas in explaining different phenomena that occurs around them.
This system of knowledge is called indigenous knowledge, which is the foundation of indigenous science. The
indigenous knowledge is embedded in the daily life of Filipinos and were prominently practiced by the community.
These knowledge were passed from generation to another, with their parents and older folks as their teacher. Below
are the examples of indigenous knowledge taught and practiced by the indigenous people:
Predicting weather conditions and seasons using knowledge in observing animal’s behavior and celestial
bodies;
Using herbal medicine; preserving foods; preserving and selecting good seeds for planting.
Indigenous Science. It is part of the indigenous knowledge system practiced by different groups of people and early

civilizations (Gribbin, 2001). This includes complex knowledge, expertise, and practices that guide humans into
agriculture, medicine, naming and explaining natural phenomena (Pawilen, 2005). Shown in the figure is the
summary of the concept of indigenous science. Indigenous science is important in the development of S&T in the
Philippines. Just like the ancient civilizations as discussed from previous topic, indigenous science gave birth to the
development of science and technology as a field and discipline. It helped the people in understanding the natural
environment and in coping with everyday life.
