EE-603 Linear System Theory: Dr. Sheraz Khan

The document discusses stability in linear systems. It defines stability as a system producing small perturbations in response to small inputs or initial conditions. Two types of stability are described: input-output (BIBO) stability, where bounded inputs produce bounded outputs; and internal stability related to asymptotic behavior. BIBO stability for continuous and discrete time linear systems is analyzed using criteria based on impulse responses and system matrices. Stability is crucial for system performance and is the main objective in control design.

Stability

Notion of Stability
The stability of a system can be thought as a continuity in its
dynamic behavior.
If a small perturbation arises in the system inputs or initial conditions,
a stable system will present small modifications in its perturbed
response.
In an unstable system, any perturbation, no matter how small, will
make states or outputs grow unbounded or until the system
disintegrates or saturates.
Stability is a basic requirement of dynamic systems that perform
operations or process signals.

BIBO Stability

Response of LTI systems

The response of a LTI system is composed of response to initial conditions
(zero-input) and response to inputs (zero-state).

zero intial condition

The concept of input-output stability refers to stability of the response to
inputs only, assuming zero initial conditions.

Definition
A system is BIBO (bounded-input bounded-output) stable if every
bounded input produces a bounded output.
