Title: Johari Window

The Johari window is a technique that helps people better understand their relationship with
themselves and others. It was created by psychologists Joseph Luft (1916–2014) and Harrington Ingham
(1916–1995) in 1955, and is used primarily in self-help groups and corporate settings as a heuristic
exercise.

The Johari Window tool is ideal for increasing self-awareness. It focuses on understanding what is visible
(or not) to us and others. It is ideal for developing both self and others awareness.

ARENA: Traits and behaviors that both yourself and others are aware of. It includes anything about
yourself that you are willing to share. This area drives clarity and builds trust.

FACADE: Aspects about yourself that you are aware of but might not want others to know. It can also
include traits that you are not sharing with others without you being aware of. What you show to others
is a façade or mask that hides your authentic self.

BLIND SPOTS: What others perceive, but you do not. Important to note: not valuing your strengths can
also be a blind spot. Feedback from others can make you more aware of your negative traits but also of
the positive ones you are not appreciating.

UNKNOWN: What is unknown to both you and anyone else.

Instructions:

1. Make your own Johari Window. Copy the template in another Word Document if you choose to
do this activity digitally. Print it out if you choose do it manually (Take a photo of this print out
once accomplished and attach it to a word file to turn in.)
2. It is up to you how large or small each window will be and it will be according to how many
adjectives you would like to add on each window.
3. How to do each window?
a. ARENA
i. List down adjectives that you can use to describe yourself and that you think
others know about you.
ii. Virtually ask people who know you to list down adjectives that they think best
describe you. List down these adjectives in the arena window. (Insert a
screenshot of these conversations after the Johari Window)
b. FAÇADE
i. List down adjectives that ONLY YOU know about yourself.
c. BLIND SPOTS
i. Draw as many objects as you want that come to your mind.
ii. Caption these objects with their description from your imagination.

Examples: The sun is yellow and bright.

The emoji is happy.

d. UNKNOWN
i. Take note of the captions on the objects in your BLIND SPOT window. Replace
the name of the object with your name.

Examples:

1. I am yellow and bright.
