Precious Analysis
KKK is the most important organization formed in Philippine history as is envisioned a unified Filipino
nation that hand-in-hand shall revolt against the abusive Spaniards and one of the most important Katipunan
documents is the Kartilya ng Katipunan that was authored by Emilio Jacinto in 1896. The Original title of the
document was “Manga Aral Nang Katipunan ng mga A.N.B” or Lessons of the Organization of the Sons of
Country. At a young age, Emilio already felt a strong desire to protect and fight for the Philippines. He was
only 18 years old when he joined the movement and became the secretary of the organization while he was
a law student at UST. Jacinto’s passion, dedication, hard work, and patriotism is evident in his choice of
words. As I read the Kartilya, I realized how Filipinos value ethics and code of conduct. I realized that ever
since discrimination is being addressed and fought already as stated in rules four and thirteen. It was also
evident that chivalry does exist in that era. I was moved to how Emilio specifically mentioned in Kartilya how
men should treat women right. It was evident in the 11th rule how he pays so much respect among women
and values them. Documents are not as prevalent as we have now because they can’t leave a trace for the
Spaniards to see, thus verbal words are important and something they shall hold unto. In his sixth rule, he
tackled the word of honor of a man. I can also recognize how he values equality and freedom in that Kartilya.
Indeed, Kartilya of Katipunan is something I would read from time to time. I believe that it is still essential
these days, I hope and pray that the youth in these generations would also appreciate it and apply in their
daily lives, too. It is applicable not only in times wherein we need to fight for our freedom but also in our daily
lives as we enjoy and maintain our freedom. These Kartilya, if put into action, will certainly upgrade the way
of lives of Filipinos.
Analysis of Alfred McCoy’s Philippine Cartoons: Political Caricature of the American Era (1900-1941)
Alfred McCoy became successful in conveying the situations of Filipinos under the government of
Americans during the 1900’s. His cartoon became an effective tool of publicizing his opinions through the
heavy symbolism which I find different and more effective than verbose written editorial for it has a wider
scope of audiences for it is easy to understand by many, even youngsters due to its creativity and
visualization. It might seem entertaining at first glance but it has a deeper and eye-opening story behind it.
His Philippine cartoons tackled the opinions of certain media about the Philippine society during American
Era and painted a broad image of society and politics under the Americans. His creation illustrated the
transition from a Catholic-centered, Spanish-Filipino society to an imperial American-assimilated one and
exposed how the culture of Americans disturbed the conservative Filipino mindset. By the means of cartoons,
Alfred McCoy played a big part in opening the eyes of the Filipinos about how the Americans control us
Filipinos when just thought that we were already free from the abuse of other countries.
Analysis of Topic 3: Reading the ‘Proclamation of the Philippine Independence”
Ambrosio “Don Bosyong” Bautista is a lawyer and became the first adviser to President Emilio
Aguinaldo inn 1898. He authored the Declaration of Philippine Independence when the independence of our
country was proclaimed on June 12, 1898, with the hopes that such a move would inspire the people to fight
more eagerly against the conqueror and at the same time, lead the foreign countries to recognize the
independence of the country. The Proclamation of the Philippine Independence summarized the reason
behind the revolution of the Filipinos against the Spaniards, the abuses and inequalities among Filipino men,
specifically the unlawful shooting and abuse of power of the Civil Guards. It also condemns the unequal
protection of the law between the Filipino people and the “eminent personage”. The proclamation also
included the explanation of the Philippine flag that was first waved by Don Bosyong that day. The said
document is a good basis for those who want to know more about history however, a 2,000-word document
is not enough to bring enough details regarding the state of the Philippines during the Spanish era as it lacks
significant details. The problem is known as the land and agrarian crisis was not mentioned, the Katipunan
was only mentioned once and there was no mention of Magdiwang, Bonifacio, and his co-founders. It might
be an honest mistake not to include those because the struggle might be unfamiliar among the people in the
middle-class or might be intentionally left out because of personal reasons. Some possible reasons to look
up to is their families are also landholders and another thing is the conflict between Bonifacio and Aguinaldo
that sprung when they were still in the same organization, the Katipunan before they choose to divide the
group.
