MODULE VIII - The World Around Us
Topic:
Reading Comprehension
The Dead Sea, the saltiest body of water of the Earth and a wonderful natural treasure, is becoming
smaller and smaller because of the decision of people to use part of its waters.
The Dead Sea is located at the lowest point of the Earth, almost 400 metres below sea level. It is 50
kilometres long. Just 40 years ago it stretched 80 kilometres in length.
One of the main reasons for the sea’s shrinking is lack of water. 90% of the waters that flow from the
Jordan River, which traditionally goes into the Dead Sea, is taken for drinking and agriculture in Israel
and Jordan.
Besides, local industry adds to the Dead Sea’s problems. They use the water for getting necessary
minerals. It’s a real disaster for the Sea.
Now hundreds of thousands of tourists come to the Dead Sea every year. Its water is so salty that a man
can read a newspaper comfortably while lying on his back on the water. The water contains a lot of
sulphur, and the thick black mud that is found at the sea’s beach is very useful for people with skin
diseases. Tourists treat their bodies with the black mud bit they don’t think about the Dead Sea‘s troubles.
It can be saved – but time is running out.
1. Answer the questions and choose the correct answer (a, b, c or d) according to the text.
3. What are the two main reasons for taking off part the the Dead Sea’s water?
A Thousands of tourists come to the Sea to treat their diseases, the Dead Sea´s water is used
by local industry.
B People take water from the Jordan River for their needs, they use the Dead Sea’s water for
getting minerals
C Local industry uses the black mud; people take the Sea’s water for agriculture and drinking.
D 90% of the Jordan waters is taken for drinking and agriculture in Israel and Jordan;
thousands of tourists come to the Sea for treating.

5. Fill in the blanks with the right words from the box below (there are 2 extra words)
Among all bad habits, smoking is really the nastiest; not only does it make your breath smell bad but it
also has a dangerous 1_impact _ on your body. Indeed, smoking 2_can_ cause serious diseases, the
most dangerous of which are lung 3_ cancer _ and heart problems. So if 4_ you _care for your health
and want to keep your body sound and 5_ safe _, it’s better for you to give 6_up_ smoking right now.
2. _ Recycling_
There are many ways to contribute to sustainability […]. For a start, […] if there are separate waste
containers, make sure to sort your waste and dispose it properly. It does not cost you anything to sort
your waste […]. Most of the things we throw away on a daily basis can be reused and recycled, while
each reused and recycled item significantly reduces the pressure on non-renewable resources as well as
helps reduce waste pollution.

3. _ Reducing waste_
In addition […], you can also take measures to reduce the amount of waste you create. How? […] For
a start, get a reusable shopping bag and cancel junk mail to reduce paper waste. Also, donate
things that may be useful to other people such as clothing, old toys, etc. or sell things you do not
need anymore such as a TV that still works for example. […] There are really millions of ways to reduce
the pressure on the landfills and subsequently on the soil and groundwater as well as air because
recycling uses less energy than virgin production which in turn decreases the carbon dioxide emissions.
5. _ Avoiding chemicals_
Another important aspect […] is the avoidance of chemicals in gardening and agriculture as well as
in your home. Artificial fertilizers, pesticides and in the end, cleaning agents have a devastating effect on
the environment as well as on human health. There are many natural and non-toxic ways to deal with
pests, while artificial fertilizers can be replaced with compost and manure. Giving up cleaning
agents may seem radical but there is an environmentally friendly alternative - organic cleaning
products. They are just as good as the conventional ones and, yes, they kill those germs too if you are
perhaps wondering.
Each little bit counts * Recycling * Each individual can contribute * Reducing waste *
Avoiding chemicals * Decreasing energy and water consumption *
