1 The graph shows how the velocity of a cyclist changes with time.

(a) Determine the deceleration of the cyclist.

deceleration = …………………………

(b) What is the distance travelled by the cyclist when he is moving at:
(i) constant deceleration?

distance = …………………………

(ii) constant velocity?

2 A stone falls vertically, hits a rubber mat and rebounds vertically upwards.
Fig. 2.1 shows the speed-time graph for the stone.

Fig. 2.1

The stone is released at A and hits the rubber mat at B.

It is in contact with the mat between B and C.
D is the highest point reached as the stone rises.
(a) Explain how Fig. 2.1 shows that the stone falls freely between A and B.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………...

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………. [2]

(b) State how Fig. 2.1 shows that the distance covered between A and B is larger than the distance
covered between C and D.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………...

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………. [1]

(c) (i) Explain the difference between speed and velocity.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………...

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..…… [2]

(ii) Determine

1. the change in speed of the stone between B and C, …….……………………… [1]

2. the change in velocity of the stone between B and C …….……………………… [1]

3 Two spheres H and L have the same shape and size but sphere H is heavier than sphere L.
They are initially suspended at rest at a certain height above the ground.
At time t = 0, both spheres are released simultaneously and allowed to fall through vacuum.
As the two spheres fall through vacuum,
A sphere H and sphere L have the same acceleration.
B sphere H has a larger acceleration than sphere L.
C sphere H has a smaller acceleration than sphere L.
D both spheres fall with the same constant velocity. ( )

4 Two spheres P and Q have the same shape and size but sphere P is heavier than sphere Q.
They are initially suspended at rest at a certain height above the ground.
At time t = 0, both spheres are released simultaneously and allowed to fall through air.
As the two spheres fall through air,
A sphere P and sphere Q have the same initial acceleration.
B sphere P and sphere Q have the same final acceleration (just before they hit the ground).
C both spheres take the same time to drop to the ground.
D both spheres fall with the same constant velocity. ( )

5 Two men, John and Kenneth, jump out of an aeroplane at

the same time.
John opens his parachute first while Kenneth opened his
parachute much later.
The pilot of another aeroplane nearby managed to take a
photograph of both of them, which is shown on the right.
Based on the photograph, we could infer that
(I) both John and Kenneth are falling freely through air.
(II) Kenneth may be falling freely through air if air resistance acting against him is negligible.
(III) both John and Kenneth have the same instantaneous acceleration.
A (I) only B (II) only
C (I) and (III) only D (II) and (III) only ( )

6 Which graph shows the acceleration of free-fall for an object at different heights above the
surface of the Earth?
