System Simulation & Modeling

Note: Answer any TWO full questions from Part A & Part B.
Part C is compulsory.
PART A
1. a. Explain the different steps involved in a simulation study and also define simulation
model ,entites,measures-of-performance and activities. 7 Marks
b. Describe a queuing system with respect to arrival and service mechanisms, system
capacity, queue discipline, flow diagrams of arrival and service events. 5 Marks
c. A small shop has one check out counter. Customers arrive at this counter at random
from 1 to 10 minutes apart. Each possible value of inter arrival time has the same
probability of occurrence equal to 0.10. The service times vary from 1 to 6 minutes
with probability shown below.

Develop simulation table for 15 customers. Find i) average waiting time ii) average
service time iii) average time customer spend in the system. Take random digits for
arrival as 91,72,15,94,30,92,75,23,30 and for service times are
84,10,74,53,17,79,91,67,89,38 sequentially. 8 Marks
2. a. Consider a single-server queuing system with arrival and service details as:
Interarrival times 3,2,6,2,4,5
Service times 2,5,5,8,4,5
Prepare a simulation table with clock, system state, Checkout Line, FEL and cumulative
statistics for the given data. Stop simulation when the clock reaches 20. 10 Marks
b. Give the detailed flow chart for the simulation of a single-server queuing system and
give overall structure of an event-scheduling simulation program. 6 Marks
c. Explain the relative merits of manual versus computerized simulations. 4 Marks
3. Describe a procedure to physically generate random numbers on the interval [0, 1] with
2-digit accuracy. 5 Marks
b. The sequence of numbers 0.54, 0.73, 0.98, 0.11, and 0.68 has been generated. Use the

Kolmogorov-smirnov test with ά =0.05 to learn whether the hypothesis that the numbers
are uniformly distributed on the interval [0, 1] can be rejected . 9 Marks
c. Develop the triangular random-variate generator with range (0, 12) and mode 5. 6 Marks

4. a. Explain with example parameter estimation with preliminary statistics, sample mean
and sample variance. 7 Marks

5. a. Compare validation in simulation to the validation of theories in the physical sciences. 8 Marks
b. A simulation model of a job shop was developed to investigate different scheduling rules.
System data for the job shop revealed that the average time spent by a job in the shop was
nearly 4 working days. The model made the following predictions, on seven independent
replications, for average time spent in the shop: 3.70 4.21 4.35 4.13 3.83 4.32 4.05
i) Is model output consistent with system behavior? Conduct a statistical test, using the
level of significance ά =0.01. ii) If it is important to detect a difference of 0.5 day, what
sample size is needed to have a power of 0.90? Interpret your results in terms of model
validity or invalidity. (use ά =0.01) 12 Marks
6. a. Discuss modeling downtimes and failures of the issues in manufacturing and
