1. This passage is mainly based on the memory that Marta Ramírez had when visiting
Mount Vesuvius.  True
2. Mount Vesuvius might erupt again in the future. True
3. Why does Marta Ramirez return again and again to Mount Vesuvius?
(Please write at least two reasons)
1. She saw the Mount Vesuvius’s eruption and was fascinated by volcanoes.
2. She studied in geology and volcanology.
4. How did Mount Vesuvius form?
Eurasian Plate pushes against African Plate. Molten rock at this collision point exerts
pressure upward. Then the volcano erupted.
5. Why do some volcanologists believe that another major eruption could occur at any
time?
Because the most catastrophic eruption happened in 79 A.D. Many smaller eruptions
have occurred since then. And another catastrophic eruption happened in 1944.
6. What do volcanologists do to predict possible eruption time for Mount Vesuvius?
1. They set up seismograph on the slopes of its cone to measure the slightest shifts
in the rock beneath the mountain.
2. They went into the crater to map what was going on underground
3. They measured the gases leaking from small vents
7. According to the passage, in what way can people who live near this volcano be
protected?
The only sure way to protect people who live near this volcano is to give them
enough warning. The city of Naples has detailed evacuation plans. Officials need to
be warned seven days before an eruption occurs.
8. How do Earth’s natural forces affect the environment around Mount Vesuvius?
It will threaten and pollute the environment. If the volcano erupts, tons of ash and
rock will be hurled into the air, which will pollute the environment.
(affect life) Moreover, no cars, planes, and train can operate. So people have to
escape on foot.
