Module 7

The document discusses Module 7 on the nervous system. It describes the spinal cord and spinal nerves' role in homeostasis through reflexive responses. It also discusses how the spinal cord transmits sensory input to the brain and motor output from the brain. The objectives are to identify indications and contraindications for contrast examinations of the nervous system, understand patient preparation, contrast media used, and examination procedures. The worksheet contains questions to test understanding of various contrast examinations like myelography and radiculography.

Module 7

Nervous System

Description
The spinal cord and spinal nerves contribute to homeostasis by providing
quick, reflexive responses to many stimuli. The spinal cord is the pathway for
sensory input to the brain and motor output from the brain. The spinal cord
and spinal nerves contain neural circuits that control some of your most rapid
reactions to environmental changes. There are different contrast examinations
involved in the study of the nervous system such as the myelography, lumbar
radiculography, and lumbar discography.

Objectives
At the end of this module, the students will be able to:

· identify the different clinical indications and contraindications for the

different contrast examinations;
· determine the patient preparations;
· discuss the contrast media used; and
· explain the procedures done in the nervous system.
Module 7
NERVOUS SYSTEM
Worksheet

I. True or False. Write TRUE if the statement is correct, and FALSE if it is wrong. (10
pts.)

___________1. Herniated nucleus pulposus is the most common clinical indication of

myelography.
___________2. Performing myelography in patients who just had a recent puncture may
increase the severity of inflammation.
___________3. Arachnoiditis is the inflammation of the subarachnoid membrane.
___________4. One of the contraindications of radiculography is discitis.
___________5. Both myelography and radiculography are contraindicated to increased
intracranial pressure.
___________6. Multiple lesions can be detected in myelography.
___________7. Spinal stenosis can be demonstrated in myelography.
___________8. If a patient has a lumbar puncture, an interval of a week is advisable
before intrathecal injection of contrast media.
___________9. Discography may be indicated for patients with a suspected prolapse on
a negative myelogram.
___________10. Contrast medium is administered intravenously to patients during lumbar
radiculography.

II. Identification. Write your answer on the blank before each number. (10 pts.)

_____________________1. What imaging equipment is used in performing contrast

examination of the spinal cord?
_____________________2. This puncture site location is the safest area for the
introduction of contrast media in myelography.
_____________________3. Where is the central ray directed in the swimmer’s lateral
projection of the cervical area?
_____________________4. An oil-based contrast media used in the early myelographic
procedures.
