Lab 7 - Chromatography

This lab experiment aims to separate the components of methyl orange dye using paper chromatography. The procedure involves placing a spot of methyl orange on a strip of chromatography paper and allowing the solvent (water) to travel up the paper, separating the different components of the dye based on how strongly they are attracted to the paper versus the solvent. The distances traveled by each component are used to calculate Rf values, which can identify the different components.

Lab # 7

Title: Chromatography

Aim: To separate the components of screened methyl orange by paper chromatography

Apparatus: Glass rod, filter paper (chromatography paper) , capillary tube, beaker , pencil, ruler

Materials: Distilled water, screened methyl orange,

Procedure:

1. Cut a rectangular piece of filter paper to 4cm across and 11 cm in height.

2. Draw a line 2.5 cm form the bottom of the paper horizontally across the width of the paper.
3. Carefully place 1 drop of screened methyl orange in the middle of the line drawn.
4. Leave the paper to stand in the beaker containing the solvent, water, ensuring the solvent does
not touch the spot of dye.
5. Remove the paper from the beaker when the solvent has travelled to the top of the paper.
6. Place the chromatogram between two clean sheets of paper to dry
7. Stick the chromatogram in your lab book only when completely dry

Results : Stick chromatogram here.

Calculate the Rf values for each of the dyes obtained and place it in a table

Discussion:
 What is chromatography? Explain what it is used for?
 What was the significance in calculating the Rf values for each of the dyes obtained
 Identify each component dye you saw form your chromatogram
 Include an equation for Rf value calculation
Conclusion:
Reflection: real life uses of chromatography, make it relevant to your future studies.
