Briefing For Lab 1. Introduction To Vector Network Analyzer (VNA)

This document provides an introduction to measuring reflection coefficient using a vector network analyzer (VNA). It discusses the main tasks for the lab which are to submit a prelab, watch instructional videos on VNA calibration and measuring reflection coefficient of an antenna, and answer questions in the manual. The document then defines reflection coefficient and discusses its use in measuring impedance mismatch and designing circuits to minimize mismatch. It also describes measuring the reflection coefficient of antennas and how it varies with frequency.

Complex Reflection Coefficient
• Due to the mismatch of the impedance from two parts of the circuit or
device, the signal energy may be partially bounced back.

Complex Reflection Coefficient

𝑍𝑍1
𝑍𝑍1 − 𝑍𝑍0 𝑍𝑍0 − 1 𝑧𝑧 − 1 Re[Γ]
Γ= = =
• Definition 𝑍𝑍1 + 𝑍𝑍0 𝑍𝑍1 + 1
𝑍𝑍0
𝑧𝑧 + 1

𝑍𝑍 1+Γ
• 𝑧𝑧 = 𝑍𝑍1 =
0 1−Γ

• Γ is measure by take the ratio of the transmission power and the

reflection power. It is in dB scale -- 10 log10 |Γ|2 . -10dB  10% reflection

• Γ = Re[Γ] + 𝑗𝑗Im[Γ]

• Design circuit to minimize Γ 2 .  𝑍𝑍1 =𝑍𝑍0 or 𝑧𝑧 = 1.

Complex Reflection Coefficient
• Antenna reflection.
• The desired case: the antenna takes all the signal power and radiates it in the air.

• The practical case: some signal energy is reflected back to the previous stage due
to impedance mismatch.  Need to minimize the reflection by design.

• It is hard to find an antenna has a fixed Γ for all frequencies because the antenna
impedance varies at different frequencies.  Γ(𝜔𝜔)

• Antenna Bandwidth: frequency range that Γ(𝜔𝜔) is less than a prescribed threshold.
