Assignment 1

This assignment covers materials from weeks 1 and 2 of a wastewater treatment engineering course. It contains 5 questions: 1) writing steady-state equations for a completely mixed flow reactor; 2) calculating BOD10 from dissolved oxygen measurements; 3) calculating BOD removal percentage and determining if a treatment plant meets regulations; 4) calculating various BOD values based on temperature and a reaction rate coefficient; 5) calculating concentrations of total solids, volatile solids, suspended solids, and dissolved solids based on mass measurements. The assignment is due on February 19th and is worth a total of 80 points.

Assignment 1
Due Date: 19 February 2020 (Please submit via Canvas, no late assignment will be accepted)
Total = 80 points

This assignment covers materials in Weeks 1 and 2.

1. Wastewater flows into a completely mixed flow reactor (CMFR) of volume V at flow rate
Q. At the inlet, the wastewater contains pollutant A at concentration Ao and pollutant B at
concentration Bo. Within the CMFR, the pollutants undergo a reaction that is first order in
both A and B (i.e., A + B  products). Write the steady-state equations that can be
solved to calculate the concentration of A at the outlet of the reactor (you do not need to
solve the equations). (15 points)

2. The dissolved oxygen concentration measured during a BOD test is 9 mg/L initially, 6
mg/L after 5 days, and 3 mg/L after an indefinitely long period of time. Calculate the
BOD10 (in mg/L). (15 points)

3. The following data have been obtained by an engineer in a BOD test that is made to
determine how well a wastewater treatment plant is operating. (15 points)

(mL) (mL)

9.0 4.0 15 285

(a) What percentage of the BOD is being removed by this treatment plant?
(b) According to the regulation, this treatment plant supposed to remove 85% of the BOD,
can it meet the regulation?

4. Some wastewater has a BOD5 of 150 mg/L at 20oC. The reaction rate constant (k) at that
temperature has been determined to be 0.23/day. (15 points)
(a) Calculate the UBOD (in mg/L).
(b) Calculate the reaction rate coefficient at 15oC (in day-1).
(c) Calculate the BOD5 at 15oC (in mg/L).

wastewater treatment plant. (20 points)
