Benefits

Brief Introduction
The benefits derived from tropical rainforests, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps are
enormous, and their impacts on other environments, animals, and humans are also
immeasurable. That is why it is important to protect and conserve these environments for our
own and the next generation’s welfare.
Conservation is the act and choice of limiting the use of natural resources for them to
be available for future use. Protection is setting aside an area or specific species of organisms
to be free from human influence and to allow them to reproduce for the next generation.
In this module, you will realize that there is a need to work together for the protection
and conservation of these valuable ecosystems. These can only be done if all humanity would
have an open eye and heart to take actions not tomorrow but now. As a student you can
participate and contribute through your small deeds. When these small deeds are combined,
the result can create a massive effect.
I am hoping that this module will create a spark in your heart for you to start doing
even a small act of kindness for our environment.

Activity 1. The Forest Ranger in Me
Objective: To cultivate one’s care for the tropical rainforest
Direction: Read the selection and analyze the graphs presented and answer the questions.
Write your answer on page 8 of this module.

The Philippines has a 15, 805, 325 hectares

(ha) of forestland divided into 6 categories as
shown in the pie chart.
The vast forest is being protected by people
employed by the government and volunteers.
They are called, forest rangers who protect the
identified forest reserves and National Parks from
damaging human activities like illegal logging,
kaingin system practices, collection of animals and
plant seeds and seedlings, and introduction of new
species.
The forest rangers patrol the forest to monitor
signs of forest fires and gather information. They
plant seedlings, create trails, and assist in the
conduct of information and dissemination activities
for the local community.
In doing those activities the forest rangers
ensure that people will fully benefit from the forest.
In return, the people should use forest products
judiciously, be responsible consumers, use an
alternative source of food that are found to be
nutritious, support the campaign of government
and other organizations to protect and conserve Patrolling Planting Education Information
the forest. Participate in tree planting activities and Drive Gathering
when visiting the forest never leave litter nor take
any species.
Protection and conservation of forests are
vital because the world is dependent on it for
sources of food, food colorant, rubber, wood
products, fragrances, flavorings, medicinal drugs,
and many more.
Therefore, the work of forest rangers is
important to ensure that forests are protected and
conserved. Isn’t it amazing to be a forest ranger?
Would you consider being one in the future? Wood Flood Medicines Food Fragrance
Products Control Source Flavorings

Guide Questions:

1. In the pie chart, which category of forestland has the biggest allocation?
2. What is the total percentage of forest reserves? How did you arrive at your answer?
3. Which activity do forest rangers perform most? What is the basis for your answer?
4. What benefit do we get the most from the forest? What is the least benefit we get
from the forest?
5. What human activities were harmful to the forest?
6. If you were a forest ranger, what will you do to protect the forests?
7. What do you think will happen if forests are not protected?
8. Will you consider to be a forest ranger in the future? Why or Why not?

4
Activity 2. Dive into the Coral Adventure

Objective: Identify ways of protecting the coral reefs and enumerate the harmful effects of
the failure to protect them.
Direction: Help the diver find the corals, and as he passes through the maze you will uncover ways
to protect the coral reef or harmful effects of coral reef destruction. Classify and write them in the
appropriate box below the maze. Reflect your answer also on page 8 of this module.

your commitment to protect and conserve the tropical rainforest, coral reef, and mangrove
swamp?

Check Your Understanding

Identify which environment benefited from the activities. Write RF for rainforest, CR for coral
