Q.1) PORTER GOV: A loaded Porter governor has four links each 250 mm long, two revolving
masses each of 3 kg and a central dead weight of mass 20 kg. All the links are attached to
respective sleeves at radial distances of 40 mm from the axis of rotation. The masses revolve at a
radius of 150 mm at minimum speed and at a radius of 200 mm at maximum speed. Determine
the range of speed.
Q.2) PORTER GOV: The arms of a Porter governor are each 250 mm long and pivoted on the
governor axis. The mass of each ball is 5 kg and the mass of the central sleeve is 30 kg. The
radius of rotation of the balls is 150 mm when the sleeve begins to rise and reaches a value of
200 mm for maximum speed. Determine the speed range of the governor. If the f riction at the
sleeve is equivalent of 20 N of load at the sleeve, determine how the speed range is modified.
Q3) PROELL GOV: All the link of a proell governor are 25.5 cm long and are pivoted on the
axis of rotation. The mass of each governor ball is 4.6 kg and the balls are attached to the
extensions of the lower links which are 6.4 cm long. These extensions are parallel to the
governor axis when the radius of rotation of the ball is 15.2 cm. Determine the equillibrium
speed at this configuration with a central mass of 36.4 kg on the sleeve.
Q.4) HARTNUG GOV: In a Hartung governor, each of the rotating balls has a mass of 9kg and
each spring has a stiffness of 270 N/cm. The length of each spring is 11.4 cm when the radius of
rotation of the ball is 6.9 cm, and the equilibrium speed is 360 rpm. Neglecting the mass of the
sleeve, determine the free length of each spring and also investigate whether the governor is
isochronous and stable.
Q.5) HARTNELL GOV: The sleeve arm and ball arm of a Hartnell governor are 9 cm and 10 cm
long, respectively. At the mean position of the sleeve, the radius at which the ball rotate is 12 cm
when the equilibrium speed is 300 rpm. Each rotating ball has a mass of 2 kg and the sleeve
movement is +/- 2 cm from the mean position. The minimum speed is 96% of the mean speed.

Determine (i) the stiffness of the spring, and (ii) the maximum speed of the governor. Neglect the
frictional resistance.
