Concrete Mix Design With GGBS M25

The document provides a mix design for concrete with a target mean strength of 31.6 N/mm2 using ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) as a partial cement replacement. The mix design calculations involve determining the water-cement ratio, cementitious content, proportions of coarse and fine aggregates, and final mix quantities. The resulting mix design for 1 cubic meter of concrete consists of 191 kg of cement, 128 kg of GGBS, 168 liters of water, 1132 kg of coarse aggregate, 853 kg of fine aggregate, and 3.19 kg of superplasticizer.

Method of placing Pumping
Step 1
Target mean strength
fck' = fck + 1.65 *S
or
fck' = fck + X

fck = 25

S= 4
X= 5.5
fck'= 31.6 N/mm2
0r
fck'= 30.5 N/mm2

Step 2
Approximate air content
Size of aggregate 20 mm

Entraped air from table 3 1%

which is 0.01

Step 3
water cement ratio
fck'= 32
Cement Grade 43
W/c = 0.4833333333

Step3 (selection of water content)

Now water content as per table 04 of IS 10262
Aggegate size 20
water content= 186 kg/m3

Above water content is for slump 50mm, for desired slump the water content will be
WCx = WC50 + ((x-50)/25)*(3/100)*WC50
x= 110 mm
WC50 186 kg/m3
WCx= 199.392 kg/m3
step 4 (Reduction of water content for Chemical adixture)
For water reducing admixture reduce water content by 5 to 10%
for superplasticizer reduce water content by 20-30%
Therefore reduce 23% water content for 1% superplasticizer

WCx= 153.532
WCx= 154.000 kg/m3

Step 5: Calculation of cementitious content

Cementitious content = water content / Wc ratio > Minimum cementitious content table 5 IS 456:2000

Cementitious content = 318.62

Say 319.00 kg/m3

GGBS = 40% of total cementious material

GGBS= 127.6 kg/m3
say 128 kg/m3

Now cement content = Cementitious content - GGBS

Cement = 191.00 kg/m3

Step 6 : Proportion of volume of coarse aggregate & fine Aggregate (clause 5.5 IS 10262)
Zone of FA = 2
Nominal Size of CA = 20 mm

Volume of CA = from Table 5 IS 10262 0.62

But above table is for water-cementitious material ratio 0.5, therefore we have to change the volume to t

Therefore Vca@w = [email protected] + ((0.5-w)/0.05)* 0.01

Now Vca@w 0.6233333333
Now according to clause 5.5.2 reduce the volume of CA by 10% for pumping
Now Vca@w 0.561
& Vfa@w = 1-Vca@w
Therefore Vfa@w= 0.439

Step 7: Mix Calculations

Quantities Mass Sp Gravity Volume

Volumne of entrapped air (a) 0.01
Volume of water (b) 154.000 1.000 wc/(sp gv *1000)
Volume of Cement © 191.000 3.150 cement/(sp gv *1000)
Volumne of GGBC (d) 128.000 3.000 GGBS/(sp gv *1000)
Volume of Chemical Admix (e) (1%

Total volume of aggregate 1-(a+b+c+d+e) =
Toatl volumne % of Aggregate Sp gravity
Mass of Coarse Aggregate 0.740 0.561 2.740
Mass of fine aggregate 0.740 0.439 2.650

Step 8 Mix proportion trail 1 for 1cum

Sl no Material Qty unit
1 Cement 191.00 kg/m3
2 water 154.00 kg/m3
3 water/cemtitious ratio 0.48
4 GGBS 128.00 kg/m3
5 Superplasticizer 3.19 kg/m3
6 Coarse Aggregate (SSD) 1137.35 kg/m3
7 Fine aggregate (SSD) 860.78 kg/m3

Step 9 Adjustment in Mix Design

1) Fine aggregates (Dry) = Mass of fine aggregate in SSD condition /(1+(%water absorption/100)-(%m
water abortion= 1.00%
Moisture content 0
Fine aggregates (Dry) = 852.25452954
say 853 kg/m3

2) Extra water required for the fine aggregate simulate a SSD condition
A = (Mass of fine aggregate in SSD condition) -(Mass of fine aggregate in dry condition)
A= 7.78 kg/m3

1) Coarse aggregates (Dry) = Mass of corse aggregate in SSD condition /(1+(%water absorption/100)-(%
water abortion= 0.50%
Moisture content 0
Coarse aggregates (Dry) = 1131.6904734 kg/m3
say 1132 kg/m3

2) Extra water required for the coarse aggregate simulate a SSD condition
B = (Mass of coarse aggregate in SSD condition) -(Mass of coarse aggregate in dry condition)
A= 5.35 kg/m3

Total water required = water requirement + A+B

Total water required = 167.13 kg/m3
say 168 kg/m3

Step 10 Mix proportion after adjustment for 1cum
