Integral Calculus Performance Task

1) The population function P(t) for a bacterial population currently at 10,000 that is growing at a rate of P'(t)=2e^2t is e^2t + 9,999. 2) Z-table entries represent the area under the normal curve to the left of the z-score, with negative z-scores below the mean and positive above. They are obtained through a probability formula. 3) The volume of the solid formed by revolving the shaded region about the x-axis from 0 to 1, with function f(x)=e^-x^2 and g(x)=x, is 2/3πe^-5 cubic units.

1. The rate of growth of bacterial population after t seconds is P' ( t )=2 e 2 t. Find the
population function P ( t ) if the current bacterial population is 10,000.

2. What do the entries of z-table signify and how were these entries obtained?

3. Prove that the volume of the solid formed from the revolution of the shaded plane about

2
3 e −5
the x-axis is equal to π cubic units.
6

4. Draw a 3-dimensional solid that results from the revolution of the rectangular strip about
the y-axis. Add labels of measurement to the solid.

5. A stone is dropped from a height of 500 m. If the stone is initially at rest and assuming
the gravity is the only force acting on the stone, how far will it be from the ground after
10 seconds?
Solutions:
1. Given: Find:
' 2t
P ( t )=2 e P (t)

p(0)=10,000
Solution:
 P ( t ) =2∫ e d t
2t

 P ( t ) =e 2t + C
 P ( 0 )=e2 (0 )+ C
 10,000=1+C
 10,000−1=C
 9,999=C
 P ( t ) =e 2t + 9,999

∴The population of function P ( t ) when the current population is 10,000 is

e 2 t +9,999 .
2. Z-table entries signify the area/value under the normal curve to the left of z. Negative
scores in z-table correspond to the values which are less than the mean while the positive
scores in the z-table correspond to the values which are greater than the mean. These z-
table entries are obtained through a formula from probability theory which I this formula:

3. Given: Find:

x 3 e 2−5
f ( x )=e V= π

g ( x )=x
a=0
b=1
Formula:

Hence the volume stated was proven true.
4. This is the 3D-model

5. Given: Find:
s ( 0 )=500 m s ( t ) , where t=10 s
a ( t )=−9.8 m/ s2
v ( 0 )=0 m/s
Solution:
First, solve for v(t)
 v ( t )=∫ a ( t ) dt
 v ( t )=−9.8 ∫ dt
 v ( t )=−9.8 t +C1
 v ( 0 )=−9.8 ( 0 ) +C 1
 0=C1
 v ( t )=−9.8 t

Second, solve for s ( t )

 s ( t ) =∫ v ( t ) dt
 s ( t ) =−9.8 ∫ tdt
2
 s ( t ) =−4.9 t + C2
2
 s ( 0 )=−4.9 ( 0 ) +C 2
 500=C2

Lastly, Solve for s(10)

 s ( 10 )=−4.9 ( 10 )2+500
 s ( 10 )=10 m

∴The stone is 10 m far from the ground after 10 seconds.
