goals in life, dreams, and aspirations which is grounded directly on the
human person’s origin, meaning, and destiny.

Preliminary Activity

Before embarking to a journey on this lesson, here’s a reflective question for you to
ponder as you go along with the topic. I hope you’ll discover the answer yourself as
you go deeper into the lesson.

Word of God

Whether you’re moving jobs, going through a major life change, or just struggling to
find your way, deciphering who you are and what you want from life can be
challenging. Perhaps you feel frustrated and out of sorts with the world? Maybe you’re
even having a little identity crisis?

These thoughts and feelings are perfectly normal. At some point in your life, you might
assume you should know yourself better – know what you want, who you are, how
you’re supposed to find your happy place. Unfortunately, busy lives often get in the
way of helping you find clear headspace to answer these important ‘life’ questions.

STUDY GUIDE
--------------------------------------------------------------------
What is Personal Development?

Personal development is a lifelong process. It is a way for people to assess their skills
and qualities, consider their aims in life and set goals in order to realize and maximize
their potential. Although early life development and early formative experiences within
the family, at school, etc. can help to shape us as adults, personal development
should not stop later in life.

There are many ideas surrounding personal development, one of which is Abraham
Maslow's process of self-actualization. Self-actualization refers to the desire that
everybody has ‘to become everything that they are capable of becoming’. In other words,
it refers to self-fulfillment and the need to reach full potential as a unique human
being. For Maslow, the path to self-actualization involves being in touch with your
feelings, experiencing life fully and with total concentration.

Importance of Self-Assessment

Assessment refers to the act of determining or estimating the value of something and
making appropriate judgments on issues. It is used interchangeably with words like
evaluation, examination etc.

Similarly, self-assessment is the ability to examine yourself to find out how much
progress you have made. It is a skill that helps individuals monitor their own work or
abilities, find out what their weaknesses and strengths are, and self-diagnose relevant
solutions.

The purpose of self-assessment is to help the individual know the extent of his abilities
and to improve upon them without the need of a performance appraiser. It involves the
use of questions such as; what are my strengths; what are the obstacles, etc.

Some general benefits of self-assessment are:

 Self-assessment makes you sure and confident about your capabilities. It
eliminates or reduces work related to fear and uncertainty.
 It enables the person to assess himself, make corrections quickly and improve
on his abilities. In other words, it enhances capacity building.
 It helps people in selecting occupations or educational programs that are best
suited for them. For instance; if you find out that you are an unfriendly or
antisocial person, you can tell that a career in marketing wouldn’t be the best
option for you.
 Self-assessment provides direction for training. Once you know what your
strengths and weaknesses are, you can choose the right tutor or training that
best fits your career needs.

STUDY GUIDE
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Who doesn’t want to strengthen their skills and habits? But it can
have a negative impact when our inner critic judges what we should do
or should be all the time. That is a problem because one of the biggest
factors of being happy is self-acceptance.

Self-acceptance is the awareness of your strengths and weaknesses.

The realistic appraisal of your talents, capabilities and worth. It is a
feeling of satisfaction with yourself despite flaws and regardless of past
choices. There are some clear steps and techniques to achieve self-
acceptance:

 Self-awareness and Setting an Intention. Become self-aware and

set an intention for acceptance by recognizing your thoughts,
feelings, and pain. Celebrate your strengths and accept your
weaknesses.
 Consider the people around you. Recognize their positive and
negative reinforcement. Surround yourself with people that
accept you and believe in you.
 Forgiving yourself and Refrain from Comparing. Learn to move on
from past regrets and accept the choices you made. Also shush your
inner critic and stop comparing yourself against others.
 Grieve for unrealized dreams. Reconcile who you are now with the
idealized image your youth.
 Perform Charitable Acts. Give to others and recognize how you are
able to make a difference in other’s lives.
 Realize that acceptance is not resignation. Acceptance is letting go of
the past and things we cannot control. You can then focus on what
you can control into here and now.
 Be kind to yourself. Cultivate self-compassion in not judging yourself or
over identifying with self-defeating thoughts and behavior.
 Stay positive. Use positive self-talk and positive emotion and other
refocusing techniques.

Self-Disclosure

Have you ever said too much on a date? Have you ever posted
something on Facebook only to return later to remove it?

STUDY GUIDE
--------------------------------------------------------------------
When self-disclosure works out well, it can have positive effects for
interpersonal relationships. Conversely, self-disclosure that does not
work out well can lead to embarrassment, lower self-esteem, and
relationship deterioration or even termination. What’s self-disclosure
anyway?

Self-disclosure is purposeful disclosure of personal information to

another person. If you personally wear your favorite T-shirt and reveal
it to your friend, then this clothing choice constitutes self-disclosure.

Superficial Self-disclosure, often in the forms of small talks, is the

key in initiating relationships that then move onto more personal
levels of self-disclosure. Telling a classmate your hobby or your
hometown during first day of class carries relatively little risk but can
build into a friendship that lasts beyond the classroom.

WRAP UP

KEYPOINTS

 The path to self-acceptance can be difficult. External

circumstances, past experiences and our programming can make
it hard to accept ourselves. When things get too hard, get help
from a loved one or professionally. Self-acceptance is a great gift.
The boundary to what we can accept is the boundary to our
freedom. With self-acceptance we can live with our imperfections
and be truly free and happy.

 The next time you disclose something to someone, just make sure
you choose wisely what to share! Better disclose yourself to God,
for He will always listen to you and accepts you even the world
turns it back against you

LESSON 3 – The Human Person

INTRODUCTION

Objective: The learners demonstrate an understanding of:

 the human nature and the inviolable dignity of every human person.
 the importance of respecting human dignity through personal and
social relationships expected of the middle and late adolescence.

REMEMBER

Word of God
The Catholic Church
proclaims that human life
is sacred and that the
dignity of the human
person is the foundation of
a moral vision for society.
This belief is the
foundation of all the
principles of our social
teaching. In our society,
human life is under direct
attack from abortion and
euthanasia. The value of
human life is being
threatened by cloning,
embryonic stem cell research, and the use of the death penalty. The intentional
targeting of civilians in war or terrorist attacks is always wrong. Catholic
teaching also calls on us to work to avoid war. Nations must protect the right
to life by finding increasingly effective ways to prevent conflicts and resolve

them by peaceful means. We believe that every person is precious, that people
are more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is
whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person.
When we fail to acknowledge as part of reality the worth of a poor person, a
human embryo, a person with disabilities – to offer just a few examples – it
becomes difficult to hear the cry of nature itself; everything is connected.

REFLECT

THE LIFE AND DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON

Just as the commandment "Thou shalt not kill" sets a clear limit in
order to safeguard the value of human life, today we also have to say
"thou shalt not" to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an
economy kills. How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly
homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock
market loses two points? This is a case of exclusion. Can we continue
to stand by when food is thrown away while people are starving? This
is a case of inequality. Today everything comes under the laws of
competition and the survival of the fittest, where the powerful feed
upon the powerless. As a consequence, masses of people find
themselves excluded and marginalized: without work, without
possibilities, without any means of escape. Human beings are
themselves considered consumer goods to be used and then discarded.
We have created a "throw away" culture which is now spreading. It is
no longer simply about exploitation and oppression, but something
new. Exclusion ultimately has to do with what it means to be a part
the society in which we live; those excluded are no longer society's
underside or its fringes or its disenfranchised – they are no longer even
a part of it. The excluded are not the "exploited" but the outcast, the
"leftovers".

The dignity of the individual and the demands of justice require,

particularly today, that economic choices do not cause disparities in
wealth to increase in an excessive and morally unacceptable manner.
Human persons are willed by God; they are imprinted with God's
image. Their dignity does not come from the work they do, but from the
persons they are.

STUDY GUIDE
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Basic Characteristics of the Human Person

1. Persons are open and relational by nature

We grow as persons only in relating and in relation to others. Filipinos

are outstanding in this regard. Being a person means:
• • Being with others – our families, relatives, friends, and
neighbors
• • Being for others – as we share our self in love and service

The social dimension of human being is founded on nature. It is our

nature to desire to belong. We need to belong to a group, community,
or society. This need come from our inner being. We need society to
live comfortably and safely, and to satisfy other needs.

2. Persons are conscious being

Persons are aware of themselves in their outgoing acts. We possess

this self-awareness through our knowing and free willing.

3. Persons are embodied spirit

There is unity between our body and souls. Contrary to those who look
down on the body and make it the source of all evil, Christian faith
sees the body as good and honorable since God has created it and will
raise it on the last day. We are created with a soul and a body. We are
embodied spirits. The soul cannot be by itself; it must be with the
body. Our body limits us but is essential because it is our avenue to
the world. The soul is also essential because it is the breath of our life
and the window to the Spirit of God. Whatever we do with our soul and
body is ours to decide.

4. Persons are historical realities

We are pilgrims or travelers on the way of achieving our full selves. In

the long run, we shall pass this earthly dwelling in history. Ancient
and primitive groups of people have developed through history from
mere tribes into what we now know as nations.

STUDY GUIDE

5. Persons are unique, yet fundamentally equal

Every person is different from another in so many aspects:

 Physical – looks, height, even identical twins are different
 Stature – manner of walking, crying, speaking, writing
 Emotional – open hearted, reserved, emotionally independent
 Psychological – personal expression, sensitivity and sentiments,
manner of thinking and reasoning

No one is exactly the same as another. The differences cause the

uniqueness in each one of us. Yet, no one can claim that he or she is
better than the others. Despite physical differences, as well as differing
intellectual and moral powers, we instinctively realize that as persons,
in some basic way, we are all equal. This is what our Father explains:
“All men are endowed with a rational soul and are created in God’s
image; they have the same nature and origin, and being redeemed by
Christ, they enjoy the same divine calling and destiny; there is here a
basic equality between all men.”

WRAP UP

KEYPOINTS

 It is not easy to see good in some people, even though there is

some good in them. Sin is part of all our lives and some people
turn to sin in significant ways. Nonetheless, Catholics believe
that all people are created by God with goodness and holiness.
Each person is a precious child of God from before we are born
through the end of our lives.

 We believe that every human being is good in his or her own way
because he or she was created in the image and likeness of God.
Therefore, even people who may seem mean or unappealing must
be treated with kindness. The weakest people in the world must
be given with special attention by Christians because sometimes
they are forgotten or mistreated, especially unborn children, old
people, and those who are terminally ill. Human life is sacred.

these things and others of their like are infamies indeed. They
poison human society, but they do more harm to those who
practice them than those who suffer from the injury.
