What Is EFT?

Emotional freedom technique (EFT), also known as tapping, is a practice that combines acupressure and psychology. It involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on an issue to relieve stress and balance energy. Research shows EFT calms the amygdala and regulates the nervous system. Common issues it can help with include anxiety, depression, fear, insomnia, headaches, and menstrual cramps. EFT is easy to do, noninvasive, requires no equipment, works quickly, and can be done alone or with a practitioner. The basic technique involves rating an issue's intensity, tapping while speaking the issue aloud, then retapping and rerating intensity.

What is EFT?

Emotional freedom technique (EFT) is also known as Tapping. The practice consists of tapping
with your fingertips on specific meridian points while talking through your issue. It's based on the
combined principles of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology.

It uses the same basic energy meridian points in the body to eliminate physical, emotional and
mental issues. By using tapping, we balance the energy system of the body to relieve stress.

According to the Tapping Solution Foundation, research shows that tapping calms the amygdala
in the brain, regulates our nervous system, and reduces stress and anxiety.

The basic Tapping technique requires you to focus on a negative emotion at hand. This can be a
fear, worry, or any issue. You do this while maintaining your mental focus on the issue. Then you
use your fingertips to tap 7-10 times on specific meridian points on the body.

Tapping on these meridian endpoints, while addressing the root cause of distress, sends a
calming signal to the brain. This allows you to feel relaxed and in control.

Common Problems:

Anxiety

Depression

Fear

Insomnia

Headache

Menstrual cramps

Anger/resentment
Advantages of Tapping

- Anyone can do it, even children; it’s that simple

- It’s noninvasive

- Requires no special equipment or location

- Faster than most other techniques

- Flexible to adapt to any situation/issue

- You can do tapping by yourself; you don’t need a practitioner there

Bonus: Tapping will work even if you are skeptical. Give it a try!
The Steps for EFT

1. Rate the intensity of your problem on a scale of 0-10 (example: headache, anxiety, anger)

2. Start tapping on your Karate Chop point on the side of the hand (see illustration)

3. While doing this, focus in on your problem while saying the name of the problem out loud (ex.
“This anxiety, this anxiety, this anxiety)

4. Then go through each of the different meridian points while tapping and saying the following
affirmation:

Even though I have this problem ____, I deeply & completely, love & accept myself.

5. Go through all the meridian points

6. Re-rank yourself on a scale of 0-10

7. Tap through all the points again

8. Repeat 6 & 7 over and over again (if the number isn’t not going down, or close to 0, do the
sequence again)

9. Then tap in the positive affirmations

Example: Even though I have this problem ____, I choose to feel _____ and I deeply

& completely, love & accept myself.

- I choose to feel calm and peaceful

- I choose to be open to possibilities in this situation

- I choose to be in control of my thoughts and actions

10. Feel exhilarated!
