Science Documentary 2016: The Math Mystery Mathematics in Nature and Universe. (A Reaction Paper)

The documentary discusses how mathematics is present in all aspects of the world, not just as an academic discipline. It shows how math is applied in various areas like nature, science, and inventions. One example shown is how the Fibonacci sequence can be seen in shells and flower petals. It also discusses Galileo's law of falling bodies, which was tested in the video by dropping objects of different weights, confirming that they fall at the same rate when air resistance is removed. While math is impressive, humans played an even more important role by discovering it and developing it into the discipline it is today through philosophers, physicists, and mathematicians.

Science Documentary 2016: The Math Mystery

Mathematics in Nature and Universe.

(A reaction paper)

Due to the rapid increase of knowledge and information, humans tend to

question every single thing in the world. As people seeks for something deeper beyond
human comprehension, soon enough as technology gets wider coupled with expanding
interest, what’s impossible becomes probable. The endless cycle of the world’s
happenings enables us to venture things out of such intricate curiosity. But what makes
us curious that eventually lead us to become inventive?

Upon watching the video, I came to the realization that Mathematics can really be
present in all aspects of the world. It is definitely not just an academic discipline but
transcends up to world’s deepest context of understanding. It was seen on the video the
different areas where Mathematics is applied and how amazing its capabilities are. One
may think that how impossible it is to be relative to other things when we all acquire the
idea that Math function only as a subject in school and as an important tool for science
and inventions. When in fact, it can exceed up to explaining the nature’s façade and
reality.

Mathematics covers a lot of areas. It was clearly presented in the video how
complex it is and how its complexity becomes useful. But one thing that caught my
interest is its relationship with nature. From the explanation about the shell being a
presentation of Fibonacci sequence and how other natural things such flower petals
relate to it was quite intriguing but fascinating at the same time. Even the explanation
about animals’ sensitivity to quantity was quite astonishing. Who would have thought
that even animals respond to the complexity of Mathematics?

In the video presented, some different theories and laws where Mathematics
serves as an integral component for its realization were showed. One of those is the
Law of Falling Bodies. This law has already been taught way back in high school so
many viewers can actually relate to this part of the video. Aristotle and Galileo’s view on
this law are different. The video made a sample activity to test the validity of both
claims. Two objects were subjected to fall on the same height but in different weight.
And the result confirmed Galileo’s claim was the accurate one that states that if we take
air out of the equation, everything falls in the same rate. From this point, it is really
amazing how it is proven that regardless of weight, objects will fall on the ground at the
same time.

However, Mathematics can be spectacular in many ways, but I realized that, it

can never exist if humans did not discover it. Human capacity to think and invent were
even more impressive than the actual discipline since it will never be introduced widely
if people from the ancient time who started the quest for Mathematics did not come up
with these ideas. What we should be proud of is our philosophers, physicist,
mathematicians, inventors and others who made a great contribution on the
development of “Math” not just as an academic discipline but also as an essential tool
for world’s innovation.
