CHP 05 - Upthrust in Fluids, Archidems' Principle and Floatation
SESSION 2021 – 22
CLASS – IX
SUBJECT -PHYSICS
Buoyant force – The upward force exerted on a body by a fluid in which it is submerged is
called upthrust or buoyant force.
Reason for upthrust
Upthrust is due to the weight of the liquid displaced by the submerged part of the body.
Factors affecting upthrust –
• Volume of the body submerged in the liquid.
• Density of the liquid in which the body is submerged.
Effect of upthrust – weight of the submerged body appears to be less.
Archimedes’ Principle
When a body is immersed partially or wholly in a liquid, it experiences an upthrust, which is
equal to the weight of the liquid displaced.
Relative density and its measurement by Archimedes principle
R.D = ρs/ρw = ms/mw
Density in g/cm3 = R.D
R.D = weight of body in air / (weight of body in air – weight of body in water)
R.D = W1/ (W1 – W2)
R.D = (Weight of solid in air /Loss of weight of solid in liquid) ×R.D of liquid
R.D = Weight of given volume of the liquid / Weight of same volume of water
= (W1- W2) / (W1 – W3)
Principle of floatation
According to principle of floatation the weight of a floating body is equal to the weight of the
liquid displaced by the submerged part.
Volume of immersed part of body /Total volume of body= density of body / density of liquid
Or v / V = ρs / ρL
Applications of Principle of floatation
• Iron nail sinks in water but a ship floats
• Floatation of human body
• Floatation of submarines
• Floatation of iceberg
• Floatation of fish
• Rising of balloons
